Malta’s ‘Unur, Fama u Glorja’ Puts Boxing & Emotion in the Ring

Unur, Fama u Glorja: A Punch of Emotion from Malta’s Boxing Scene

In the heart of Ħamrun, where the scent of fresh bread from the local bakery mingles with the salty sea air, a unique story unfolds. It’s not in the bustling streets or the historic architecture, but in the quiet corners of a boxing gym. Here, a short film titled ‘Unur, Fama u Glorja’ (Honour, Fame, and Glory) is set to make waves, delving into the raw, emotional world of boxing and the people who dedicate their lives to it.

A Glance into the Ring

‘Unur, Fama u Glorja’ is the brainchild of local filmmaker and Ħamrun resident, Mario Farrugia. The film, shot entirely in Malta, tells the story of a young boxer, Michael, grappling with grief and pride as he navigates the sport and his personal life. It’s a tale that hits close to home for Farrugia, who himself grew up in Ħamrun and has a deep understanding of the local boxing scene.

“Boxing is more than just a sport here,” Farrugia explains. “It’s a way of life, a community. I wanted to explore that, to show the passion, the pain, the pride that comes with it.”

From Ħamrun to the Big Screen

The film was shot in various locations around Ħamrun, including the iconic Ħamrun Boxing Club, where many of Malta’s top boxers have honed their skills. The club, with its worn-out punching bags and faded posters, serves as a backdrop to Michael’s journey, reflecting the grit and determination of the sport.

Farrugia assembled a talented cast and crew, many of whom are local to Ħamrun. The lead role of Michael is played by rising Maltese actor, Clayton Mercieca, who brings a raw, emotional intensity to the character. The film also features Malta’s own boxing champion, Joseph ‘Joe’ Falzon, in a supporting role.

More than Just a Fight

‘Unur, Fama u Glorja’ is not just about the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. It’s about the people behind the gloves, their struggles, their dreams. It’s about the love for a sport that demands everything, and the pride that comes from giving it your all.

“Boxing is about more than winning or losing,” Farrugia says. “It’s about heart, about courage. It’s about standing in that ring, facing your fears, and fighting for something bigger than yourself.”

The film is set to premiere later this year, with plans to screen it at local film festivals and cinemas. It’s a story that Farrugia hopes will resonate with audiences, not just in Malta, but anywhere boxing is more than just a sport.

“This is our story,” Farrugia says, “our passion, our pride. I hope it inspires others to find their own fight, their own glory.”
