Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless
Zach Vella: A Marathon of Hope from London to Malta
Imagine pounding the pavement for 1,800 kilometers, your feet blistering, muscles aching, all for a cause close to your heart. This is the reality for Zach Vella, a 34-year-old Maltese man who set off from London on August 1st, aiming to complete an epic run back home to Malta, all in aid of the homeless.
From London to Valletta: A Journey of Endurance
Zach’s journey is no ordinary feat. He’s traversing cities, countryside, and coastlines, averaging a grueling 60 kilometers a day. He’s slept in tents, under the stars, and in the kindness of strangers’ homes. His route has taken him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and now, he’s making his way through the boot of Italy, eyeing the Strait of Sicily.
His progress can be tracked on his Facebook page, where he shares updates, photos, and videos from the road. The outpouring of support from fellow Maltese and Europeans alike has been overwhelming, with many joining him for a few kilometers, offering words of encouragement, and even donating to his cause.
Running for a Cause: Malta’s Homeless Crisis
Zach’s mission is deeply personal. He wants to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless community. According to recent statistics, the number of homeless people in Malta has been rising, with over 1,000 people estimated to be living on the streets or in temporary accommodation.
Zach’s goal is to raise €50,000 for Streetwise, a local charity that supports the homeless. He’s already surpassed €30,000, thanks to generous donations from the public. “Every cent counts,” Zach says, “and I hope my run will not only raise funds but also spark conversations about homelessness in Malta.”
Malta Welcomes Its Hero
As Zach nears the finish line, Malta is gearing up to welcome its hero. His final stretch will take him through Sicily and across the Mediterranean, with an expected arrival in Valletta sometime in late September. A welcome party is planned at the City Gate, where Zach will finally rest his weary feet and celebrate his incredible achievement.
Zach’s run is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a testament to human resilience, compassion, and the power of community. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can come together to support those in need. As Zach puts it, “We might be small, but our hearts are big. Let’s show the world what Maltese can do when we unite for a cause.”
