Drugs Seized: Man Arrested in St. Julian’s Road Stop

In the heart of Malta’s bustling St. Julian’s, a routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust yesterday evening. A man, identified as 32-year-old Maltese national Mario Xuereb, was charged after police discovered a substantial amount of illegal substances in his possession.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust

According to a statement released by the Malta Police Force, officers conducting a traffic stop on Triq San Gorg Xewkija around 9 PM noticed suspicious behavior from the driver of a silver Ford Focus. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed 500 grams of cannabis, 50 ecstasy tablets, and 20 grams of cocaine hidden in the glove compartment and under the seats.

“We’re committed to keeping our streets safe,” said Inspector Joseph Cassar, leading the operation. “This seizure is a testament to our officers’ vigilance and dedication.”

Xuereb’s Arrest and Charges

Xuereb was immediately arrested and taken into custody at the St. Julian’s Police Station. He was later charged with trafficking, possession, and intent to supply illegal drugs. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to 26 years under Malta’s Drug Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation Act.

Xuereb is the latest in a series of arrests made in recent months as part of the police’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Malta. Last year, a similar operation in Msida led to the seizure of over 1,000 ecstasy tablets and the arrest of four individuals.

Community Reaction and Police Appeal

Residents of St. Julian’s reacted with relief to the news of the bust. “We’re glad the police are taking action,” said Lisa Camilleri, a local shop owner. “We’ve noticed an increase in drug-related activity lately, and it’s worrying for our community.”

The Malta Police Force has urged the public to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. “Your information could be crucial in helping us keep Malta safe,” said Inspector Cassar. “We encourage everyone to stay vigilant and report any concerns to us.”

The case against Xuereb will be heard in court next month. Meanwhile, police investigations continue to identify any potential accomplices or links to other drug trafficking activities.
