New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta

New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski: A Fresh Face at the Vatican’s Malta Embassy

As the sun set over the Grand Harbour, a new chapter unfurled in Malta’s rich ecclesiastical history. A sleek, black car pulled up at the Apostolic Nunciature in Floriana, and out stepped Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the Vatican’s new Apostolic Nuncio to Malta. With a warm smile and a firm handshake, he stepped into his new role, ready to navigate the unique religious scene of these Mediterranean islands.

From Poland to the Mediterranean

Born in Poland, Mgr Załuski brings a wealth of diplomatic and ecclesiastical experience to his new post. After earning his doctorate in canon law, he served in various roles within the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. His most recent posting was as the Apostolic Nuncio to Luxembourg and Monaco. Now, he finds himself in Malta, a country where the Catholic Church plays a significant role in society and culture.

“I’m excited to be here,” he said in an exclusive interview with Hot Malta. “Malta has a unique history and identity, shaped by its location at the crossroads of civilizations. I look forward to learning from and contributing to this vibrant community.”

Navigating Malta’s Ecclesiastical Scene

Mgr Załuski arrives at a time when the Maltese Church is grappling with various challenges, from declining attendance to ongoing investigations into historical abuse cases. Yet, it’s also a time of renewal, with initiatives like the ‘Church on the Move’ project aiming to make the Church more present and relevant in people’s lives.

“I’m aware of the challenges,” he acknowledged. “But I also see the dedication and passion of the Maltese clergy and faithful. Together, we can face these challenges and work towards a Church that is truly a home for all Maltese.”

Diplomacy and Dialogue: Załuski’s Agenda

As Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr Załuski will act as the Vatican’s ambassador to Malta, fostering dialogue between the Holy See and the local Church. He will also play a crucial role in diplomatic relations, representing the Vatican’s interests in Malta and vice versa.

When asked about his priorities, he said, “My first priority is to listen. I want to understand the unique dynamics of the Maltese Church and society. Then, I hope to contribute to the ongoing dialogue, both within the Church and between the Church and the broader community.”

He also expressed his eagerness to engage with Malta’s diverse cultural scene. “I’m looking forward to visiting the many cultural and historical sites Malta has to offer. I believe that understanding a country’s culture and history is key to understanding its people and their aspirations.”

His first official engagement will be a meeting with President George Vella, followed by a visit to the Archdiocese of Malta. He also plans to visit the other dioceses in Malta and Gozo, as well as various parishes and institutions.

“I’m here to serve,” he said. “I look forward to meeting and learning from the Maltese people, and to working together for the good of our Church and our society.”
