Two Years of Melodious Magic: A Celebration of Opera Nova Project

Imagine, if you will, the grand, historic Teatru Manoel in Valletta, Malta’s capital city. The lights dim, the audience hushes, and a single, powerful voice pierces the silence, launching into a aria that sends shivers down your spine. This is not a dream, but a reality thanks to the Opera Nova Project, celebrating its second anniversary this year.

From Humble Beginnings to Centre Stage

The Opera Nova Project was born in 2020, a brainchild of local entrepreneur and philanthropist, Joseph Cuschieri, who envisioned a platform to nurture and showcase Malta’s burgeoning opera talent. What started as a small, intimate event at the St. James Cavalier in Valletta has since grown into a major cultural event, attracting international artists and drawing large, enthusiastic crowds.

Growing Pains and Triumphs

Like any young initiative, Opera Nova has faced its challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant hurdles, with performances forced to move online or be cancelled entirely. Yet, the project’s resilience and adaptability shone through. They quickly pivoted to digital performances, reaching audiences worldwide and gaining international recognition.

One of the project’s standout moments was its collaboration with the Teatru Manoel in 2021. The historic theatre, built in 1731, provided a stunning backdrop for Opera Nova’s most ambitious production to date, a performance of Puccini’s La Bohème that left audiences spellbound.

: A Symphony of Success

As Opera Nova Project marks its second anniversary, it looks towards a bright future. Plans are underway for a series of concerts and workshops throughout 2022, including a return to the Teatru Manoel and a new collaboration with the MCC Philharmonic Orchestra. The project also aims to expand its educational initiatives, offering masterclasses and scholarships to aspiring opera singers.

Joseph Cuschieri, founder of Opera Nova Project, reflects on the journey so far, “We’ve come a long way in two years, but we’re just getting started. Our goal is to make Malta a hub for opera, to nurture local talent and attract international artists. We invite everyone to join us on this musical journey.”

So, mark your calendars, opera lovers. The stage is set for another year of melodious magic, courtesy of the Opera Nova Project. Let the music play on!
