Bowser Truck Fire in Birkirkara: Driver Denies Arson

Blaze of Denial: Locals Left in Smoke After Bowser Truck Fire

In the quiet, narrow streets of Birkirkara, the acrid smell of burnt fuel and the distant wail of sirens shattered the peaceful morning. A bowser truck, parked innocuously outside a garage on Triq Il-Kbira, had suddenly become an inferno, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky. Neighbours rushed out, some in their pyjamas, others in work clothes, all united in shock and concern.

Fire Engulfs Fuel Truck, Residents Evacuated

The fire, which broke out around 7:30 AM, quickly engulfed the truck, its intense heat causing nearby cars to melt and windows to shatter. Residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, with many watching from a safe distance as firefighters battled the blaze. “I was making breakfast when I heard a loud explosion,” said Maria, a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “I looked out and saw the truck on fire. It was terrifying.”

The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) responded swiftly, deploying multiple appliances to control the fire. They managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby properties, but not before it caused significant damage. The garage, which had been closed at the time, was left with a charred shell, and several cars parked nearby were written off.

Driver Denies Arson Allegations

In an unexpected turn of events, the driver of the bowser truck, 45-year-old Joseph Xuereb from Msida, was arrested on suspicion of arson. However, he has since denied setting the fire, leaving investigators with more questions than answers. Xuereb, who has been driving bowser trucks for over a decade, claims he had parked the vehicle outside the garage as usual and had no idea how the fire started.

“I’m as shocked as everyone else,” Xuereb told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “I’ve driven bowser trucks for years, and I’ve never had an incident like this. I parked the truck, locked it, and went to have a coffee. Next thing I know, I’m hearing about a fire, and then I’m being arrested.”

Investigations Ongoing, Residents Seek Answers

The police are treating the fire as suspicious and are continuing their investigations. They have not ruled out the possibility of foul play, but have also not discounted the possibility of a mechanical fault or an accident. Residents, meanwhile, are left wondering what could have caused such a dramatic event in their usually quiet neighbourhood.

“We just want to know what happened,” said another resident, who preferred not to be named. “Was it an accident? Was it deliberate? We need answers so we can feel safe in our homes again.”

As the smoke clears and the charred remains of the bowser truck are towed away, one thing is clear: the fire has left the tight-knit community of Birkirkara with more questions than answers. With investigations ongoing, one can only hope that the truth will soon be revealed, and that the residents of Triq Il-Kbira can return to their peaceful, smoke-free lives.
