Kevin Camilleri: GWU’s New General Secretary
Kevin Camilleri: A New Chapter for GWU
In the heart of Malta, at the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters in Msida, a new chapter unfolds. Kevin Camilleri, a familiar face in the trade union movement, has been approved as the new General Secretary. The GWU, a stalwart of Malta’s labour scene since 1943, is set to navigate a new course under his leadership.
From Shop Steward to General Secretary
Camilleri’s journey to the top post at GWU is a testament to his dedication and passion for workers’ rights. Starting as a shop steward at the Malta International Airport, he climbed the ranks, becoming GWU’s Assistant General Secretary in 2016. His election as General Secretary, following the retirement of Mario Camilleri, was a resounding endorsement of his leadership potential.
“I’m honoured and humbled by the trust placed in me,” Camilleri said, reflecting on his appointment. “I look forward to continuing the work of my predecessors and driving GWU forward in these challenging times.”
Navigating Challenging Times
The road ahead for Camilleri and GWU is filled with challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought rare changes to the labour market, with remote work and job insecurity becoming the new norm. Camilleri plans to tackle these issues head-on, advocating for workers’ rights in the face of these shifting dynamics.
“We’re living in a world of work that’s changing rapidly,” Camilleri said. “GWU must evolve to meet these challenges, ensuring that workers’ voices are heard and their rights protected.”
Camilleri also plans to strengthen GWU’s role in education and training, helping workers adapt to the demands of the modern labour market. He envisions GWU’s Msida headquarters, located at 147 Melita Street, as a hub for these initiatives, providing resources and support for workers across various sectors.
A New Chapter for GWU and Malta’s Workers
As Kevin Camilleri takes the helm at GWU, Malta’s labour movement looks towards a new chapter. With his experience, passion, and vision, Camilleri is set to lead GWU and its members through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
“I’m committed to making GWU a voice for all workers in Malta,” Camilleri said. “Together, we can build a fairer, more inclusive labour market that works for everyone.”
