Drugs Raid in Paceville: Man Accused of Possession, Trafficking
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a bustling Paceville street, usually filled with laughter and music, was suddenly silent. The neon lights flickered as police officers, armed with a search warrant, raided a third-floor apartment in the heart of Malta’s entertainment district. The target? A 32-year-old man now accused of drug possession and trafficking.
Operation ‘Sunrise’: The Build-Up
Codenamed ‘Operation Sunrise’, the raid was the culmination of a months-long investigation by the Malta Police Force’s Drug Squad. Neighbours reported seeing plainclothes officers staking out the building on St. George’s Road for weeks, their unmarked cars blending in with the nightlife crowd. The target, a local man identified only as ‘M’, was known to the police, having been previously arrested on drug-related charges.
According to a police spokesperson, the operation was triggered by intelligence reports suggesting a significant increase in drug activity in the Paceville area. “We received numerous complaints from residents and business owners about suspicious activity,” the spokesperson said. “We took these seriously and acted accordingly.”
What Was Seized?
During the raid, officers allegedly found a substantial amount of illegal substances, including cannabis and ecstasy pills, hidden in the apartment. They also seized drug paraphernalia and a large sum of money, believed to be the proceeds of drug sales. A police source told Hot Malta that the seized drugs have an estimated street value of over €10,000.
“This is a significant seizure,” the source said. “It sends a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking that we are serious about tackling this issue and will not tolerate such activities in our communities.”
Aftermath and Charges
Following the raid, ‘M’ was arrested and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with possession of illegal drugs, trafficking, and intent to supply. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to 26 years under Malta’s tough drug laws.
Meanwhile, the Paceville community has welcomed the police operation. “We’re tired of the drug-related issues in the area,” said a local business owner, who wished to remain anonymous. “We want Paceville to be a safe and enjoyable place for everyone, and this sends a strong signal that such activities won’t be tolerated.”
