Malta Blooms with Chelsea Inspiration
Chelsea’s Blooms Blossom in Malta’s Gardens
Imagine strolling through the lush greenery of Verdala Palace’s gardens, the scent of blooming roses filling the air, as you marvel at the vibrant hues of tulips, daffodils, and pansies. This isn’t a dream, but a reality brought to you by the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which has burst into bloom right here in Malta.
Malta’s Blooming Connection
The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, the world’s most prestigious flower show, may be held in London, but its influence has reached our sunny shores. Thanks to a collaboration between the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and the RHS, Malta is now home to a series of stunning floral displays inspired by the Chelsea Flower Show.
From the historic streets of Valletta to the scenic gardens of San Anton Palace, Malta’s public spaces have been transformed into a riot of colour, with over 10,000 plants and flowers imported from the UK. The project, dubbed ‘Malta in Bloom – Inspired by Chelsea’, aims to showcase the best of both worlds – Malta’s rich history and the UK’s horticultural excellence.
Flower Power in Malta
But how did this floral extravaganza come to life? The seeds were sown last year when the MTA, eager to boost tourism, approached the RHS with the idea. The RHS, always looking to share its love for gardening, jumped at the chance to bring a touch of Chelsea to the Mediterranean.
The result is a series of stunning displays that pay homage to both countries. In Mdina’s quiet streets, you’ll find a recreation of the Chelsea Flower Show’s famous Great Pavilion, complete with a Maltese twist – think local limestone and traditional wooden balconies. Meanwhile, in Rabat, the Wignacourt Museum’s courtyard has been transformed into a vibrant garden, inspired by the Chelsea Flower Show’s Artisan Gardens.
And it’s not just about the flowers. The project has also seen the creation of a series of workshops and events, designed to share the love of gardening with locals and tourists alike. From beekeeping courses to flower arranging classes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Blooming Future
But what does the future hold for Malta’s blooming connection with the Chelsea Flower Show? According to the MTA, this is just the beginning. Plans are already underway to expand the project next year, with even more gardens and events set to take place.
As for the RHS, they’re delighted with the success of the project. “It’s been wonderful to see the joy that our flowers have brought to Malta,” says a spokesperson. “We can’t wait to see what next year brings.”
So, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply love a good bloom, there’s plenty to enjoy in Malta this year. And who knows? You might just find yourself inspired to don your gardening gloves and get stuck in.
