Malta Offers Full Salary to Lure Docs Home
Government’s New Scheme: Keeping Maltese Docs Home
Imagine this: You’re Dr. Sarah, a Maltese doctor specialising in the UK. You’ve spent years training, and now you’re faced with a choice – stay in the UK, where you’ve built a career, or return home to Malta. The Maltese government has just made that choice a little easier. They’re offering to pay your full salary if you come back.
Malta’s Medical Brain Drain: A Growing Concern
Malta’s medical brain drain has been a growing concern for years. According to the Malta Medical Association, around 300 Maltese doctors are practicing in the UK alone. The reasons are familiar: better pay, more resources, and career progression opportunities. But the government is fighting back with a new scheme aimed at luring these doctors back home.
In a bid to reverse this trend, the government has announced a scheme that will see it paying the full salary of Maltese doctors who specialise abroad and decide to return. The scheme, which will run for three years, is part of a wider strategy to strengthen Malta’s public health sector.
How Does the Scheme Work?
The scheme is open to Maltese doctors who have specialised abroad and are willing to work in the public health sector in Malta. The government will pay their full salary for a period of three years, with the option to renew. The scheme is not limited to any specific specialisation, but the government is particularly keen to attract specialists in areas where there are shortages, such as psychiatry and paediatrics.
To sweeten the deal, the government is also offering a relocation allowance to help with the cost of moving back to Malta. Plus, there’s the added bonus of Malta’s warm climate, rich history, and Mediterranean lifestyle.
Reaction from the Medical Community
The scheme has been welcomed by the Malta Medical Association, which has long campaigned for measures to address the brain drain. Dr. Keith Sciberras, the association’s president, told Hot Malta, “This is a significant step in the right direction. We hope it will encourage many of our colleagues abroad to consider returning to Malta.”
However, some doctors have raised concerns about the scheme’s long-term sustainability. Dr. Maria Xuereb, a Maltese doctor practicing in the UK, told Hot Malta, “While this is a great initiative, we need to ensure that the public health sector is equipped to retain these doctors once the scheme ends.”
: Malta’s Health Sector Transformation
The scheme is just one part of the government’s wider plan to transform Malta’s health sector. Plans are underway to build a new hospital in Gozo and upgrade existing facilities in Malta. The government is also investing in technology, with plans to introduce telemedicine and digital health records.
Health Minister Chris Fearne told Hot Malta, “We want to make Malta a destination of choice for medical professionals. This scheme is a step in that direction, but it’s just the beginning. We have a lot more planned.”
So, Dr. Sarah, the choice might just be a little easier now. With the government picking up the tab, and a host of other benefits, Malta is beckoning. The question is, will you answer the call?
