Malta’s May Melting Pot: A Week of Culture, Nature, and Nourishment

As the Mediterranean sun begins to scorch the cobbled streets of Valletta, Malta’s cultural calendar heats up too. This week, from the 18th to the 24th of May, our islands transform into a melting pot of art, music, and gastronomy. So, grab your sunscreen and let’s dive in!

Art in the Air: Valletta Street Art Festival

Kicking off our week is the Valletta Street Art Festival, turning our capital’s historic walls into a vibrant canvas. From the 18th to the 22nd, local and international artists will be painting murals along Republic Street, Merchant Street, and other iconic thoroughfares. Catch the artists in action, and watch as Valletta’s skyline evolves before your eyes. Don’t miss the opening ceremony on the 18th at Pjazza Teatru Rjal.

Music in the Meadows: Isle of MTV Malta Special

On the 20th, the party moves to Floriana’s Il-Fosos Square for the Isle of MTV Malta Special. This year’s lineup promises to be a belter, with headliners set to rock the stage until the early hours. Gates open at 4 PM, so make sure to arrive early to secure your spot in the crowd. And remember, it’s free entry – but get there quick, as it’s first come, first served!

Foodie Fete: Gozo’s Festa Frawli

Across the channel, Gozo’s Victoria Square plays host to the annual Festa Frawli, or Strawberry Festival, from the 21st to the 23rd. This three-day celebration of all things strawberry sees the square transformed into a bustling market, with local producers selling their wares. From strawberry ice cream to traditional Maltese pastizzi with a berry twist, there’s plenty to tantalize your taste buds. And don’t miss the strawberry-eating contest – it’s a sight to behold!

Nature’s Call: Birdwatching in the Marsaxlokk Wetlands

For a change of pace, spend a peaceful morning on the 24th exploring the Marsaxlokk Wetlands. This hidden gem on the southeastern coast is a haven for birdlife, with over 100 species recorded here. Join the Malta BirdLife team for a guided walk, and learn about the wetlands’ vital role in the migration of these feathered friends. The walk starts at 8 AM, so be sure to arrive early.

So there you have it, folks – a week packed with culture, nature, and nourishment. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s something for everyone. So get out there and make the most of Malta’s melting pot!
