Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless
Local Hero: Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope from London to Malta
Imagine running 1,800 kilometers, from the bustling streets of London to the sun-kissed shores of Malta. Now, imagine doing it not just for personal glory, but to raise awareness and funds for the homeless. This is exactly what local hero Zach Vella has accomplished, and his epic journey has left Malta buzzing with pride and inspiration.
From the Streets of London to the Heart of Malta
Zach Vella, a 32-year-old Maltese endurance athlete, set off from London’s Tower Bridge on October 1st, 2021. His mission? To run back home to Malta, raising funds and awareness for the Malta Community Chest Fund, which supports various causes, including homelessness. With a support team in a van, Zach pounded the pavement, averaging around 60 kilometers a day, for a staggering 30 days.
His journey took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to his beloved island. On November 1st, he was greeted by cheering crowds at the Triton Fountain in Valletta, having run a total of 1,800 kilometers. The sight of the Grandmaster’s Palace and the sound of the Maltese language must have been an emotional homecoming for Zach, who had spent the previous month running through foreign lands.
Malta’s Response: A Wave of Support
Malta has embraced Zach’s achievement with open arms. Social media has been flooded with messages of pride and admiration, with many Maltese people following his progress and donating to his cause. Local businesses have also shown their support, with some even providing Zach with free accommodation and meals along his route.
Upon his arrival, Zach was welcomed by the Prime Minister, Robert Abela, who praised his “remarkable feat” and presented him with a plaque. The Malta Community Chest Fund has also expressed its gratitude, with the President, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, thanking Zach for his “outstanding contribution” to the charity.
Zach’s Message: More Than Just a Run
For Zach, this run was about more than just setting a personal record. It was about raising awareness and funds for a cause close to his heart. “I wanted to do something that would make a difference,” he says. “I’ve been lucky in life, and I wanted to give back.”
Zach’s journey has certainly made a difference. He has raised thousands of euros for the Malta Community Chest Fund, and his story has sparked conversations about homelessness and those in need. His run has also highlighted the power of endurance sports as a force for good, inspiring others to push their limits for a cause.
As Zach reflects on his journey, he is quick to point out that he couldn’t have done it alone. “The support I’ve received from Malta has been incredible,” he says. “From the people who donated, to the businesses that sponsored me, to the friends and family who believed in me, I couldn’t have done this without them.”
Zach’s epic run from London to Malta is more than just a remarkable athletic achievement. It’s a testament to the power of human endurance, the strength of community support, and back. It’s a story that has captured the hearts of Maltese people, and it’s a story that will continue to inspire for years to come.
As for Zach, he’s already to his next challenge. “I don’t know what it is yet,” he says with a smile. “But I know it will be something that makes a difference.”
If you’d like to support Zach’s cause, you can still donate to the Malta Community Chest Fund. Let’s continue to make a difference, one step at a time.
