Man Arrested in Mdina Drug Bust
Drugs Seized: Man Arrested in Mdina Road Stop
In an early morning operation, Maltese police intercepted a car near the historic Mdina gate, leading to the seizure of a substantial amount of drugs and the arrest of a 32-year-old man. The suspect, a resident of Birkirkara, was found in possession of cannabis and ecstasy, with an estimated street value of over €10,000.
Mdina Road Stop Yields Significant Drug Haul
Acting on a tip-off, the police team, led by Inspector Joe Borg, pulled over the suspect’s vehicle around 7:30 AM on Tuesday. The car, a silver Ford Focus, was stopped just outside Mdina’s main gate, a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. The bust was part of an ongoing operation targeting drug trafficking in the central region.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered several packages containing cannabis and ecstasy hidden in the car’s compartments. The drugs were carefully wrapped and concealed, indicating a level of sophistication in the suspect’s operation. The seized drugs weighed approximately 1.5 kilograms, with the cannabis alone amounting to over 1.2 kilograms.
Suspect’s Criminal History Revealed
Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to the police headquarters in Floriana for further questioning. It was revealed that the man had previous convictions for drug-related offenses, including possession and supply. His criminal history, along with the quantity and type of drugs found, suggests that he was involved in the distribution of drugs in the local area.
Superintendent Mario Camilleri, leading the investigation, stated, “This arrest sends a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking. We are committed to dismantling these networks and bringing those responsible to justice. Our intelligence-led operations, combined with community support, are yielding significant results in our fight against drugs.”
Community Reaction and Police Appeal
Local residents and business owners in Mdina have welcomed the news of the arrest, expressing their concern over the presence of drugs in their community. “We’re glad the police are taking action,” said Anna, a Mdina shopkeeper. “We want Mdina to remain a safe and pleasant place for both locals and tourists.”
The police are appealing to the public for any information that could help in their ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Drug Squad on 21242000 or the nearest police station.
As the investigation continues, the arrested man remains in police custody, pending his arraignment in court. The seized drugs have been sent for analysis, and the police are working to identify any potential links to other criminal networks.
