Man Charged After Paceville Drug Bust
Drugs Seized in Paceville Road Stop: Man Charged
In the early hours of Saturday, a routine traffic stop in Paceville turned into a significant bust for the Maltese police. A man, now identified as 32-year-old Matthew Vella from Birkirkara, was charged with drug possession and intent to supply after officers found a substantial amount of illegal substances in his car.
Paceville: A Hub of Activity
Paceville, a bustling town in the limits of St. Julian’s, is no stranger to police activity. Known for its vibrant nightlife, it’s also a hotspot for police patrols and checks. This latest incident, however, stands out due to the quantity and variety of drugs seized.
Vella was pulled over near the popular ‘The Point’ shopping mall, a stone’s throw from the town’s famous nightclubs. The police, acting on a tip-off, searched his vehicle and discovered a stash of cocaine, ecstasy pills, and cannabis, with an estimated street value of over €10,000.
Police: “A Blow to Local Drug Trade”
Superintendent Joseph Muscat, leading the operation, praised the officers’ vigilance. “This seizure is a significant blow to the local drug trade,” he said. “We’re committed to keeping our streets safe, and operations like this send a clear message to dealers: we won’t tolerate drug activity in Malta.”
Vella was arrested and remanded in custody pending further investigations. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to 26 years under Maltese drug laws.
Community Reaction: “We Want Our Streets Safe”
Local residents and business owners welcomed the news. “We’re tired of seeing drug-related issues in our town,” said Mario Galea, owner of a nearby café. “We want our streets safe, especially for our children and tourists visiting Paceville.”
Hot Malta reached out to the Malta Youth Council for comment. Chairperson, Sarah Grech, echoed the sentiment, “We applaud the police’s efforts. Young people deserve to enjoy Paceville’s nightlife without the threat of drugs.”
