Zach Vella Completes London-Malta Run for Homeless
Zach Vella: From London to Malta, One Step at a Time for the Homeless
Imagine pounding the pavement for 1,200 miles, your feet blistering, muscles screaming, all for a cause close to your heart. This is the reality for Zach Vella, a Maltese man who embarked on an epic run from London to Malta, raising awareness and funds for the homeless.
Setting Off: London’s Streets to Malta’s Shores
Zach, a 35-year-old former semi-professional footballer, started his journey on August 1, 2021, from the iconic Tower Bridge in London. His destination? The historic city gates of Mdina, Malta, some 1,200 miles away. The challenge? To complete this mammoth run in just 60 days, averaging around 20 miles a day.
“I’ve always been passionate about helping those in need,” Zach told Hot Malta. “I’ve seen firsthand the struggles of the homeless, and I wanted to do something big, something that would grab people’s attention and make a difference.”
Malta’s Support: From Strangers to Family
Zach’s run took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, the Mediterranean island of Malta. Along the way, he encountered overwhelming support from strangers who became friends, offering him food, water, and even a place to rest. In Malta, the response was no different.
“I was blown away by the support I received in Malta,” Zach said. “From people cheering me on in Rabat and Mdina to the local businesses that sponsored me, it felt like I was running with an army behind me.”
Local businesses like Café Jules in Mdina and Triq Tre in Valletta showed their support, donating funds and providing Zach with much-needed energy boosts during his final miles.
Crossing the Finish Line: A New Beginning
After 60 grueling days, Zach finally crossed the finish line on September 30, 2021, at the Mdina city gates. His achievement was met with a roaring cheer from a crowd of supporters, including his family, friends, and even some of the people he had helped along the way.
Zach’s run raised over €15,000 for Streetwise, a Maltese charity dedicated to helping the homeless. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me, donated, and shared my journey,” Zach said. “This is just the beginning. I’m already planning my next challenge to continue raising awareness and funds for those in need.”
As for what’s next, Zach is keeping tight-lipped, but he promises it will be another epic challenge that will push his limits and inspire others to make a difference.
