Abela: Malta’s Leader or Spin Master?

Robert Abela: Malta’s Man of the Moment or Master of Spin?

Standing at the foot of the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, one can’t help but feel the weight of history. Yet, today, it’s not the ghosts of knights past that stir the air, but the words of the man who stands before it – Robert Abela, Malta’s Prime Minister.

From Legal Eagle to Leader

Robert Abela’s rise to power was as swift as it was unexpected. A lawyer by profession, he was catapulted into the Prime Minister’s office following the resignation of his predecessor, Joseph Muscat, in the wake of the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Abela, a former government lawyer, was elected leader of the Labour Party in January 2020, and subsequently sworn in as Prime Minister.

Abela’s ascent was met with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Some saw in him a fresh face, untainted by the scandals that had engulfed his predecessor. Others, however, viewed him as a continuation of the same, a puppet of the powerful party machine that had brought him to power.

Crafting a New Narrative

Abela wasted no time in attempting to distance himself from the past. He promised a new era of transparency and accountability, a stark contrast to the opacity that had characterized his predecessor’s administration. He set about dismantling the old guard, sacking ministers and party officials tainted by scandal, and pledging to clean up the party’s act.

Abela’s communication strategy has been as aggressive as it has been effective. He has taken to social media with a vengeance, using it to bypass traditional media and speak directly to the people. His posts are a mix of policy announcements, personal anecdotes, and not-so-veiled attacks on his critics. It’s a strategy that has won him many fans, but also drawn criticism from those who accuse him of using social media as a tool of propaganda.

Walking the Tightrope

Abela’s challenge is a complex one. He must navigate the delicate balance between satisfying the demands of his party’s base, many of whom are resistant to change, and meeting the expectations of a public hungry for reform. He must also contend with the ongoing investigations into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, which threaten to ensnare members of his own party.

Abela’s handling of the pandemic has been a case study in this tightrope walking. He has been praised for his government’s swift and decisive action in the face of the crisis, implementing some of the strictest lockdown measures in Europe. Yet, he has also been criticized for his government’s handling of the vaccination rollout, which has been slower than many of its European counterparts.

Abela’s response to the crisis has also highlighted his political acumen. He has used the pandemic to push through a raft of reforms, from changes to the public health system to new laws on remote work. It’s a strategy that has drawn praise from some, but also accusations of using the crisis to further his own political agenda.

As Malta begins to emerge from the pandemic, all eyes are on Abela. Can he deliver on his promises of reform and transparency? Can he distance himself from the scandals of the past and forge a new path for Malta? Or will he, like his predecessor, be consumed by the same forces that brought him to power?

Abela’s future, and indeed Malta’s, hangs in the balance. But one thing is certain – Robert Abela is a man who knows how to play the game. Whether he’s a cynical hustler or a genuine reformer remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure – he’s a man who knows how to keep the spotlight on him.

“I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to get things done,” Abela once said. As Malta looks to the future, it’s a sentiment that many will be hoping he can live up to.
