5,000 Youth March in Annual Scout and Guide Parade

Sea of Uniforms Floods Republic Street

It was a sea of red, blue, and green that flooded Republic Street yesterday, as over 5,000 Scouts and Guides marched in unison, their laughter and chatter filling the air. The annual Scout and Guide parade, a staple in Malta’s calendar, was back with a bang, painting the historic streets of Valletta with a vibrant display of youth, energy, and camaraderie.

More Than Just a Parade

The parade, organised by the Malta Scout Association and the Malta Girl Guides Association, is more than just a spectacle. It’s a celebration of the values these organisations instill in their members – values like leadership, teamwork, and community service. It’s a testament to the growth and development of over 10,000 youngsters involved in Scouting and Guiding in Malta.

Starting from the Grandmaster’s Palace, the contingents made their way down Republic Street, past the iconic St. George’s Square, and ended at the City Gate. The march was led by the Scout and Guide bands, their music echoing off the ancient buildings, adding a festive rhythm to the parade.

Local Pride and Global Ties

Among the participants were contingents from the Maltese Armed Forces, the Police, and the Civil Protection Department, showcasing the strong ties between these organisations and the Scout and Guide movement. Also present were contingents from overseas, including those from the UK, Italy, and France, highlighting the global connections fostered through Scouting and Guiding.

For many locals, the parade was a chance to show their support. “It’s great to see so many young people coming together like this,” said Joe, a Valletta resident. “It makes you proud to see them marching down our streets, representing our country and its values.”

: A Year of Celebrations

The Scout and Guide movement in Malta is gearing up for a year of celebrations in 2023, marking the 90th anniversary of Scouting in Malta and the 100th anniversary of Guiding. With plans already underway for various events and initiatives, it’s set to be a year filled with even more colour, energy, and inspiration.

As the last contingents made their way off Republic Street, the echoes of their laughter and the rhythm of their march lingered in the air. It was a reminder of the power of youth, the strength of community, and the enduring spirit of Scouting and Guiding in Malta.
