Malta Thyme Warning: Check Your Packets

Thyme Out: Health Alert Over Local Herb Packets

Picture this: you’re at the bustling Mercato Central in Valletta, browsing the vibrant stalls filled with fresh produce, including those little packets of thyme that add a burst of Mediterranean flavour to your dishes. Now, imagine reaching for one, only to find a health warning slapped across it. This isn’t a scene from a dystopian film, but a reality that’s got Maltese health authorities buzzing.

Contaminated Packets: The Facts

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has issued a health warning over certain packets of thyme, following reports of contamination with a harmful pesticide. The affected packets, bearing the brand name ‘Herbs & Spices’, were found to contain residues of thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid pesticide linked to adverse health effects in humans.

According to the MCCAA, the packets in question were sourced from a local supplier and distributed to several outlets across Malta and Gozo. While no specific illnesses have been reported, the authority is urging consumers to exercise caution and check their packets for the following details:

    • Brand: Herbs & Spices
    • Product: Thyme
    • Batch number: 20220501
    • Expiry date: 31/12/2023

Local Impact and Precautionary Measures

News of the contamination has Malta’s food industry, with local restaurants and caterers scrambling to ensure their supplies are safe. Chef Mario Borg, owner of the popular TemptAsian restaurant in Msida, told Hot Malta, “We’ve always sourced our herbs locally, but this has made us double-check our suppliers and consider alternative sources.”

In light of the warning, the MCCAA advises consumers to take the following precautions:

    • Check the batch number and expiry date on your thyme packets.
    • If you have any of the affected packets, do not consume them. Instead, dispose of them responsibly and keep the packaging as evidence.
    • Report any suspected adverse reactions to the Environmental Health Directorate on 2122 4500.

: Ensuring Food Safety

As investigations continue, the MCCAA has reassured consumers that it’s working closely with local suppliers to prevent such incidents in the future. “We’re committed to ensuring the safety of the food we consume,” a spokesperson said. “This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in our food supply chain.”

Hot Malta will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, let’s remember that while our local thyme is a staple in Maltese cuisine, it’s always important to stay informed and vigilant when it comes to our food.
