Momentum’s Three-Point Plan to Aid Domestic Violence Survivors

Breaking the Cycle: Momentum’s Three-Point Plan to Aid Domestic Violence Survivors

Imagine, if you will, the quiet streets of Msida on a seemingly peaceful evening. A woman, let’s call her Maria, steps out of her apartment, her heart pounding in her chest. She’s not running from a thief or a mugger, but from the man who should have been her safe haven – her partner. Maria is one of many Maltese women who’ve had to flee their homes due to domestic violence.

But what happens next? Where does Maria go? Who does she turn to? These are the questions that Momentum, a local NGO dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence, is seeking to address with their latest proposals.

Safe Havens: A Network of Emergency Shelters

Momentum’s first proposal aims to establish a network of emergency shelters across Malta and Gozo. Currently, the only state-funded shelter, Dar Merħba Biss, is located in Rabat and has a limited capacity. Maria, like many others, might not have the luxury of time to secure a spot there.

“We envision safe havens in strategic locations – like Msida, where Maria lives, or Birkirkara, or even in Gozo,” explains Dr. Maria Attard, Momentum’s Director. “These would provide immediate safety and support, helping women like Maria make informed decisions about their next steps.”

Legal Aid: Bridging the Gap

Domestic violence is a complex issue that often involves legal entanglements. Many survivors struggle to navigate the legal system, facing language barriers, lack of understanding, or simply not knowing where to start. Momentum’s second proposal seeks to address this by providing free legal aid.

“We want to offer survivors practical help, like legal advice, assistance with restraining orders, or representation in court,” says Dr. Attard. “This could be the difference between a woman feeling empowered to leave her abuser or being trapped in a cycle of violence.”

Community Support: Building a Safety Net

Momentum’s third proposal focuses on community engagement. They aim to educate the public about domestic violence, its signs, and how to support survivors. This could involve workshops in local communities, awareness campaigns, or even training for professionals who might encounter survivors, like healthcare workers or teachers.

“Domestic violence isn’t just a private matter,” Dr. Attard emphasizes. “It affects our entire community. If we can foster a culture of support and understanding, we can help break the cycle of violence.”

Momentum’s proposals are ambitious, but they’re not alone in their fight. They’re working closely with the government, other NGOs, and international organizations to turn these plans into reality. And with every step forward, they’re bringing Maria and countless other women one step closer to safety.

“We won’t stop until every woman in Malta and Gozo knows she has a safe place to turn to,” Dr. Attard declares. “Until then, we’ll keep fighting, keep advocating, and keep supporting.”
