Malta’s Eco-Innovators: Upcycled Towels and Hearing Tech Bag Top Entrepreneurship Prize
Imagine this: a bustling lecture hall at the University of Malta, filled with the hum of anticipation. Students, mentors, and judges are all waiting for the moment the winners of the annual Student Entrepreneurship Prize are announced. This year, the top spot went to two innovative, eco-conscious startups that are set to make waves in their respective industries. Let’s dive into the stories of these local game-changers.
From Beach Towels to Eco-Fashion: The Rise of Re-Towel
Meet Re-Towel, the brainchild of 22-year-old environmental science student, Maria Grech. Her journey began when she noticed the vast amount of beach towels discarded after a single use at local beaches like Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha. “I thought, why not give these towels a second life?” she recalls.
Re-Towel upcycles old beach towels, transforming them into stylish, durable bags. Each bag is unique, bearing the faded prints and worn-out patterns of its predecessor. Maria’s creations have found a niche market among eco-conscious locals and tourists alike, who appreciate the blend of sustainability and style.
But Re-Towel is more than just a business for Maria. It’s a mission to reduce textile waste and promote a circular economy in Malta. “We’re not just selling bags,” she says, “we’re spreading awareness about and sustainability.”
Hearing the Call: Innovative Tech from AudEase
Another standout startup at the prize-giving was AudEase, a hearing aid technology developed by engineering student, Joseph Camilleri. Joseph was inspired to create AudEase after witnessing the struggles faced by his grandfather, who suffered from hearing loss.
AudEase is a discreet, affordable, and customizable hearing aid that connects to smartphones via Bluetooth. It’s designed to be user-friendly, with an intuitive app that allows users to adjust volume and settings. The device is also equipped with advanced noise-cancellation technology, making it ideal for use in noisy environments like Valletta’s bustling streets or the lively atmosphere of local bars and cafes.
Joseph’s innovation has the potential to revolutionize the hearing aid industry, making assistive technology more accessible and affordable. “I want to ensure that no one misses out on the joy of conversation or the beauty of music due to hearing loss,” he says.
Winning Big,
Both Re-Towel and AudEase walked away with €5,000 in prize money, mentorship opportunities, and access to incubation programs. But the real reward, they say, is the validation and support they’ve received from the local community.
Maria and Joseph are now , eager to grow their startups and make an even bigger impact. Maria plans to expand Re-Towel’s product range to include other upcycled items, while Joseph is working on improving AudEase’s technology and securing partnerships with local audiologists.
As we watch these young entrepreneurs navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, one thing is clear: Malta’s future is in good hands.
