Malta’s Student Entrepreneurs Transform Beach Towels & Hearing Aids

From Beach Towels to Hearing Aids: Malta’s Student Entrepreneurs Make Waves

Imagine transforming a simple beach towel into a sustainable fashion statement, or turning a hearing aid into a sleek, high-tech gadget. This is exactly what two teams of Maltese students have achieved, winning the top prize at the recent University of Malta’s Student Entrepreneurship Competition.

Upcycling Magic on the Maltese Coast

Meet the team behind ‘Towel Up’, a sustainable fashion brand that’s giving new life to old beach towels. Inspired by Malta’s beautiful coastlines, these innovative students are turning discarded towels into stylish, upcycled bags, wallets, and phone cases. Their journey began on the sandy shores of Golden Bay, where they noticed the amount of waste left behind by beachgoers.

“We wanted to create something meaningful from the waste we saw around us,” explains team member, Maria Grech. “And what better way to do that than by upcycling something as common and useful as a beach towel?”

Hearing Technology Gets a Makeover

Meanwhile, another team of students is revolutionizing the hearing aid industry with their startup, ‘AudEase’. Their product, the ‘EaseAid’, is a discreet, Bluetooth-enabled hearing device that connects to smartphones, offering users a world of audio possibilities. The team was driven by a desire to make hearing aids more accessible and appealing to younger users.

“We wanted to create a hearing aid that people would actually want to wear,” says team captain, Matthew Aquilina. “Something that’s not just functional, but also stylish and easy to use.”

Winning Big and

Both teams walked away with the top prize of €5,000 at the competition, which was held at the University of Malta’s Msida campus. The prize money will help them further develop their products and bring them to market. But the real win, they say, is the validation of their ideas and the opportunity to make a difference in their respective industries.

“This win is a testament to what can happen when you combine creativity, sustainability, and a desire to solve real-world problems,” says Professor Sandra Galea, head of the University’s Entrepreneurship Education Unit. “We’re incredibly proud of what these students have achieved and can’t wait to see what they do next.”

As for the future, both teams have big plans. Towel Up is looking to expand its product range and reach, while AudEase is working on improving the EaseAid’s technology and securing partnerships with hearing clinics. And with Malta’s thriving startup ecosystem behind them, there’s no telling how far these student entrepreneurs will go.

So, the next time you’re soaking up the sun on Malta’s beaches, or struggling with a hearing aid that’s seen better days, remember the names Towel Up and AudEase. Because sometimes, all it takes to make a difference is a little creativity and a lot of heart.
