Momentum Proposes Three Ways to Fight Domestic Violence in Malta

In the heart of Malta, at the bustling Strait Street, the echoes of laughter and clinking glasses often mask a darker reality. Just around the corner, behind closed doors, some women are living in fear, trapped in cycles of domestic violence. But a local NGO, Momentum, is fighting to break these cycles, proposing three innovative solutions to help victims.

Momentum’s Call to Action

Momentum, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting victims of domestic violence, has presented three proposals to the Maltese government. These initiatives aim to strengthen the support system for victims, making it easier for them to escape abusive situations and rebuild their lives.

Proposal 1: Emergency Accommodation Expansion

Momentum’s first proposal focuses on expanding emergency accommodation options. Currently, safe houses are limited, and many victims are turned away due to lack of space. Momentum proposes converting underutilised state properties into temporary shelters. For instance, the derelict buildings along the Msida promenade could be repurposed to provide immediate refuge for victims.

“We have the space, we have the need, but we lack the will to act,” says Dr. Maria Attard, Momentum’s director. “These buildings could be transformed into safe havens, giving women a chance to escape and plan their next steps.”

Proposal 2: Legal Aid Reform

Momentum’s second proposal targets the legal system. The organisation wants to see legal aid extended to cover all stages of the court process, not just the initial application for a protection order. This would ensure victims have legal representation throughout their cases, leveling the playing field against often better-resourced abusers.

Momentum also proposes establishing a dedicated domestic violence court, similar to those in other European countries. This would ensure consistency in sentencing and faster processing times, sending a clear message that domestic violence will not be tolerated.

Proposal 3: Prevention Through Education

Momentum’s final proposal looks to prevent domestic violence before it starts. The organisation wants to see comprehensive education programmes introduced in schools, teaching children about healthy relationships and the importance of respect and consent.

“We need to change the culture that allows domestic violence to persist,” says Dr. Attard. “By educating our children, we can break the cycle of abuse and create a safer, more equal society.”

Momentum’s Call to Action

Momentum is calling on the Maltese government to adopt these proposals, and on the public to support their cause. “We can’t do this alone,” says Dr. Attard. “We need everyone – the government, the public, the community – to stand with us and say, ‘No more.’ No more violence, no more fear, no more silence.”

To get involved, you can donate to Momentum, volunteer your time, or simply share their message on social media. Together, we can make Malta a safer place for everyone.
