Drugs Seized in St Paul’s Bay: A Routine Patrol Turns Unusual

In the quiet, sun-kissed town of St Paul’s Bay, a routine police patrol took an unexpected turn on Tuesday evening. A man, later identified as 35-year-old local resident, Joseph Xuereb, was found in possession of a substantial amount of drugs. The discovery was made around 7 pm, as officers from the St Paul’s Bay police station were patrolling the bustling Triq San Pawl Street, a stone’s throw away from the picturesque Bugibba Square.

Patrol Turns Unusual

According to a police spokesperson, the officers noticed Xuereb acting suspiciously near the popular Maxokk Café. Upon approaching him, they found him in possession of 50 grams of cannabis, 10 grams of cocaine, and various ecstasy tablets. Xuereb was immediately arrested and taken into custody for further questioning.

“We were just doing our job, ensuring the safety of our community,” said PC Joseph Grech, one of the officers involved in the arrest. “It’s not every day a routine patrol turns up something like this. But it’s a reminder that we’re always vigilant, always watching out for our community.”

Community Reaction

The news of the arrest spread quickly among the close-knit community of St Paul’s Bay. While some residents expressed shock, others praised the police for their swift action. “We’re glad they’re on top of things,” said Maria Camilleri, a long-time resident of St Paul’s Bay. “We want our town to be safe, especially for our children.”

Xuereb, a local construction worker, is no stranger to the law. He has previous convictions for drug-related offenses. His neighbors expressed disappointment, hoping that this latest incident would serve as a wake-up call for him to turn his life around.

Drugs in Malta: A Persistent Issue

While Malta has strict drug laws, drug abuse remains a persistent issue. According to the Malta Drug Information and Research Foundation, cannabis is the most commonly used drug in Malta, with cocaine and ecstasy also being prevalent. The foundation’s director, Dr. Marcella Attard, emphasizes the importance of community involvement in tackling the issue.

“It’s not just about law enforcement,” she said. “It’s about education, about creating awareness, about providing support for those who need it. It’s about our community coming together to say no to drugs.”

In the wake of this incident, St Paul’s Bay’s local council has announced plans to organize a community meeting to discuss the issue of drugs in the area. The meeting, to be held at the St Paul’s Bay Community Centre, is open to all residents and aims to foster a sense of community involvement in tackling the issue.

As for Xuereb, he is expected to appear in court next month to answer charges of drug possession and intent to supply. The police, meanwhile, continue their patrols, ensuring that St Paul’s Bay remains a safe haven for its residents.
