Gżira Man in Critical Condition After Three-Storey Fall
Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Tuesday evening following reports of a man falling from a third-floor balcony. The incident, which occurred around 8 PM, left the victim with critical injuries and raised questions about balcony safety in Malta’s densely populated urban areas.
Resident Plunges Three Storeys
The man, a 35-year-old Gżira resident, was found lying unconscious on the pavement outside his apartment building in Triq il-Kbira, a bustling street known for its vibrant cafes and shops. Neighbours reported hearing a loud thud and rushing out to find the man injured. “It was terrifying,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous. “I hope he pulls through.”
Rushed to Mater Dei Hospital
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived promptly and stabilised the victim before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. As of Wednesday morning, the man remained in critical but stable condition, with doctors working to treat his injuries. The hospital declined to comment further on the patient’s condition.
Balcony Safety Under Scrutiny
The incident has sparked debate about balcony safety in Malta’s high-rise apartments. Many buildings in urban areas like Gżira and Sliema have balconies with low railings or none at all. In response to the incident, the Gżira Local Council issued a statement expressing concern and promising to review balcony safety regulations.
“We extend our best wishes to the victim and his family,” the council said. “We will be looking into this matter and consulting with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of our residents.”
The Police are still investigating the cause of the fall. They have not ruled out foul play but have not yet made any arrests. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Gżira Police Station on 2124 2200.
In the meantime, residents in Gżira and across Malta are calling for improved balcony safety measures. “It’s a scary thought that something like this could happen so easily,” said a local resident. “We need to do something to prevent this from happening again.”
