AI Fever Sweeps Malta: 6,000 Users Sign Up in 48 Hours

Imagine this: a queue stretching from St. George’s Square to Republic Street, not for the latest iPhone, but for a chance to learn Artificial Intelligence. This was the scene in Malta last weekend, as the ‘AI for All’ programme launched to an rare response.

The programme, a brainchild of the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) and the Ministry for Education, aimed to introduce AI to the masses. It was a resounding success, attracting 6,000 users in just 48 hours. The sheer volume of interest has left organisers buzzing like bees in a hive at the Three Cities.

AI for All: A Local Phenomenon

Malta’s AI journey is not new, but it’s certainly gaining momentum. The island nation, known for its rich history and Mediterranean charm, is now also making waves in the tech world. The ‘AI for All’ programme is a testament to this, with participants ranging from students in Msida to retirees in Zebbug.

“We’ve seen a surge in interest in AI locally,” says Dr. Ivan Grech Mintoff, Director of MITA. “The ‘AI for All’ programme is our way of democratising AI, making it accessible to everyone, not just the tech elite.”

AI in Action: What’s on Offer?

The programme offers a mix of online and offline learning, from introductory courses at the University of Malta to hands-on workshops at the Malta AI & Blockchain Summit venue in St. Julian’s. Participants can learn about machine learning, natural language processing, and even AI ethics.

But it’s not just about learning. The programme also connects users with local AI projects, like the AI-driven waste management system in Birkirkara. Participants can see AI in action, right here in Malta.

“We want people to understand that AI isn’t just about robots and science fiction,” says Dr. Grech Mintoff. “It’s about improving our daily lives, from how we manage our waste to how we treat diseases.”

: Malta’s AI Future

The ‘AI for All’ programme is just the beginning. MITA plans to build on this momentum, expanding the programme and integrating AI into the national curriculum. The goal? To make Malta an AI hub in the Mediterranean.

But for now, it’s all about the participants. “We’re thrilled to see so many people eager to learn AI,” says Dr. Grech Mintoff. “This is just the start of Malta’s AI journey, and we’re excited to see where it takes us.”

So, will you be next in line? The queue might not stretch from St. George’s Square to Republic Street anymore, but the opportunity to learn AI certainly is.
