Malta’s AI Revolution: 6,000 Users in Just 48 Hours
Imagine this: the bustling streets of Republic Street, Malta’s capital city, teeming with life, yet 6,000 people, from all walks of life, are not out and about, but engrossed in their screens, learning the language of the future – Artificial Intelligence (AI). This was the scene just 48 hours ago, as Malta’s ‘AI for All’ programme launched, drawing an rare number of participants.
AI for All: A Local Initiative with Global Reach
The ‘AI for All’ programme, a brainchild of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) and supported by local tech giants like ARC and Tech.mt, aims to democratise AI learning. It’s not just about Malta keeping up with the global AI race; it’s about ensuring that every local resident, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to understand and harness this powerful tool.
“We wanted to make AI learning accessible to everyone, from students to seniors, from tech enthusiasts to those who’ve never coded,” explains Dr. Ian Gauci, MDIA’s Executive Chairperson. “We’re not just preparing Malta for the future; we’re empowering our people to shape it.”
Malta’s AI Learning Spree: The Numbers and Stories
In just 48 hours, the programme attracted 6,000 users, a number that’s still growing. Among them is Maria, a 65-year-old retiree from Birkirkara, who’s always been fascinated by technology but never had the chance to explore it. “I’ve got my grandkids to thank for pushing me to try this,” she laughs. “I might be the oldest in my class, but I’m not going to let that stop me from learning something new.”
Then there’s Alex, a 19-year-old student from Msida, who’s already dabbled in coding. “AI for All is a great way to build on what I know,” he says. “It’s also a chance to connect with others who are just as passionate about this stuff.”
Malta’s AI Learning Journey: What’s Next?
The ‘AI for All’ programme is just the beginning. Over the next six months, participants will look the basics of AI, machine learning, and data analytics. They’ll also have the chance to apply what they’ve learned through real-world projects, mentored by some of Malta’s top tech experts.
“We’re not just teaching AI; we’re fostering a community of AI learners and innovators,” says Dr. Gauci. “We want to see what they can create, what problems they can solve, and how they can make Malta a global AI hub.”
As for Maria and Alex, they’re both excited about what’s to come. “I can’t wait to see what I can do with AI,” says Maria. “Who knows, maybe I’ll even create something that’ll help my community.” Alex, on the other hand, is already dreaming big. “I want to start a tech company someday,” he says. “This programme is my first step towards making that dream a reality.”
Malta’s AI revolution has just begun. In the next six months, 6,000 users will transform from AI learners to AI innovators. And who knows? Perhaps the next big AI breakthrough will come not from a Silicon Valley lab, but from a small island in the Mediterranean.
