The Mothers of Invention: Malta’s Women Pioneering Innovation

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of Msida. Amidst the humdrum of daily life, you might spot a woman, perhaps with a child in tow, stopping by a peculiar-looking kiosk. This is no ordinary kiosk; it’s a ‘MamaBox’, the brainchild of Malta’s very own ‘Mothers of Invention’.

The Birth of an Idea

Meet the women behind MamaBox – Marthese and her sister Maria. Like many mothers, they faced the challenge of finding fresh, affordable produce while juggling family life. “We’d often run out of essentials, and shopping with kids was a nightmare,” Marthese recalls. Their solution? A 24/7, self-service, eco-friendly grocery kiosk stocked with local produce and everyday items.

From Concept to Reality

The sisters pitched their idea at the ‘Women in Tech’ hackathon, winning the top prize and a €10,000 grant. They’ve since expanded to three kiosks, with plans for more. Their success hasn’t come without challenges. “People underestimated us,” Maria says, “but we’ve proven that innovation can come from anywhere, even from mothers with busy lives.”

Inspiring a New Wave of Innovation

Marthese and Maria aren’t alone. Meet Dr. Nadine Delia, a mother of three and founder of ‘EcoLeaders Malta’. She’s transforming schools into green hubs, empowering students to lead environmental projects. Then there’s Dr. Maria Attard, a mother of two, who’s developing innovative cancer therapies at the University of Malta.

These women are part of a growing movement of Malta’s ‘Mothers of Invention’, using their unique perspectives to drive innovation. They’re challenging stereotypes, proving that motherhood and innovation aren’t mutually exclusive.

So, the next time you see a MamaBox or hear about an innovative project, remember, it might just be the work of Malta’s ‘Mothers of Invention’.
