Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: A Local on Top of the World

Imagine standing at 8,848.86 metres above sea level, gazing out at a world that stretches out in every direction. This was the reality for Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, as he became one of the few Maltese to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. The achievement, which took place on May 16th, is a testament to Borg’s resilience, determination, and passion for the great outdoors.

From the Mediterranean to the Himalayas

Borg, a 39-year-old father of two from Birkirkara, has always had a love for the outdoors. Growing up in Malta, he spent his childhood exploring the island’s rugged coastline and hiking its many trails. His passion for mountaineering began in 2007 when he climbed Mount Etna in Sicily. Since then, he has scaled some of the world’s most challenging peaks, including Aconcagua in Argentina and Denali in Alaska.

However, Everest was always the ultimate goal. “Everest is the highest peak in the world,” Borg says, “It’s a challenge that every mountaineer dreams of taking on.” The journey to the summit was no easy feat. It took Borg and his team two months to reach the top, battling harsh weather conditions, thin air, and the physical demands of the climb.

Malta’s Support from Afar

Back home in Malta, Borg’s family, friends, and the local community were cheering him on. His wife, Diane, and their two children, aged 10 and 7, followed his progress closely. “It’s been tough being away from them for so long,” Borg admits, “But knowing they were supporting me from back home made all the difference.”

The local mountaineering community also played a significant role in Borg’s success. “I’ve trained with many of them over the years,” he says, “Their support and encouragement have been invaluable.” The Malta Mountaineering Club, based in Msida, has been particularly instrumental in Borg’s journey. They provided him with training opportunities, equipment, and moral support.

: Inspiring the Next Generation

Borg’s achievement is not just a personal triumph, but a national one. It puts Malta on the map as a country that produces world-class mountaineers. Borg hopes that his success will inspire the next generation of Maltese mountaineers. “There’s so much potential in Malta for outdoor activities,” he says, “I’d love to see more young people getting involved in mountaineering and exploring the great outdoors.”

Borg’s next challenge? He’s keeping that under wraps for now. But one thing’s for sure, with his passion for mountaineering and determination to succeed, we can expect great things from this local hero.
