Man Hospitalised After 3-Storey Gżira Balcony Fall
Gżira Balcony Plunge: Man Seriously Injured in Three-Storey Fall
It was a scene of shock and disbelief on Tuesday evening as emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block following a man’s dramatic fall from a third-floor balcony. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 PM, left the man, a 35-year-old Maltese national, with serious injuries, requiring immediate hospitalization.
Residents Recall the Moment
Residents of the block, located on Triq il-Kbira, described hearing a loud thud and rushing to their balconies to find the man lying on the ground below. “It was terrifying,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I just hope he makes a full recovery.”
Emergency Response and Investigation
Police and Civil Protection Department officers quickly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area while paramedics provided immediate medical assistance. The man was then transported to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance, accompanied by a relative. The police are currently investigating the incident, with early indications suggesting it may have been an accident.
Superintendent of Police, Keith Micallef, told Hot Malta, “We are treating this as an accident at this stage. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to come forward and assist our investigations.”
Safety Concerns and Preventive Measures
This incident has once again raised concerns about balcony safety in Malta’s densely populated urban areas. While many apartments in Gżira and other towns have balconies, not all are equipped with safety barriers. The Civil Protection Department has urged residents to ensure their balconies are safe, reminding them that accidents can happen in an instant.
“We cannot stress enough the importance of balcony safety,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department. “We urge all residents to install safety barriers and ensure that any furniture or objects that could pose a risk are secured.”
Hot Malta will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, our thoughts are with the man and his family, wishing him a speedy recovery.
