Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: A Maltese Mountaineer’s Triumph on Everest

Imagine standing at 8,848.86 metres above sea level, the world at your feet, the sky a vast, endless blue. This was not a dream, but a reality for Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, who recently scaled the highest peak on Earth, Mount Everest.

From Malta’s Hills to the Roof of the World

Borg, a 37-year-old resident of Msida, has been climbing since he was a teenager. His journey began in Malta’s own rugged landscapes, from the cliffs of Dingli to the heights of Majjistral. But Everest was always the ultimate goal. “I’ve always been drawn to the challenge,” he says, “and Everest is the biggest challenge out there.”

His journey to the top was no easy feat. It took years of preparation, both physically and mentally. He trained in the cold, unforgiving conditions of the Alps and the Himalayas, carrying heavy packs, climbing steep slopes, and enduring harsh weather. “It’s not just about strength,” he says, “it’s about endurance, resilience, and a strong will to keep going.”

Summit Fever: The Final Push

Borg’s expedition to Everest started in late March, with the team acclimatizing in the Khumbu Valley before making their final push to the summit. On May 16, after weeks of grueling climbs and camps, Borg reached the top, becoming the 5,350th person to achieve this feat.

“Reaching the summit was an indescribable feeling,” he recalls. “It was a mix of relief, joy, and pride. I thought of all the people who supported me, my family, my friends, and the Maltese people. I felt like I was carrying their hopes and dreams with me.”

Back Home: Inspiration and the Future

Borg returned to Malta on May 22, greeted by cheering crowds at Malta International Airport. His achievement has sparked national pride and inspiration. “Alex’s feat is a testament to what Maltese can accomplish,” says Climbing Malta president, Mark Azzopardi. “It shows that with determination and perseverance, we can reach the highest heights.”

Borg, now back in his day job as a software engineer, is already planning his next adventure. “I want to inspire more Maltese to take up climbing,” he says. “Our islands have so much to offer, and there’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored.”
