Maltese Mountaineer Reaches Everest Summit
Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: A Local’s Ascent to Everest
Imagine standing at 8,848.86 meters above sea level, the world’s highest peak stretching out before you, a solitary figure against the vast, icy expanse. This was not a fantasy, but the reality for Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, who summited Mount Everest on May 16, 2023.
From the Med to the Himalayas
Alex, a 37-year-old from Msida, traded Malta’s Mediterranean shores for the frozen peaks of the Himalayas. His journey began in the familiar streets of Malta, where he trained relentlessly, carrying heavy backpacks up and down the heights of Dingli Cliffs and the rugged terrain of Comino. Little did he know that these local landscapes would be the perfect training ground for his ultimate challenge.
Alex’s fascination with mountaineering started young. “I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors,” he recalls, “but it was a trip to the Alps that sparked my love for high-altitude climbing.” From there, it was a natural progression to set his sights on the world’s highest peak.
Summit Fever
Everest, known as ‘Chomolungma’ in Tibet and ‘Sagarmatha’ in Nepal, is more than just a mountain. It’s a test of human endurance, a symbol of triumph over adversity. Alex’s expedition was no exception. He faced extreme weather conditions, the ‘Khumbu Cough’ – a high-altitude respiratory infection, and the psychological challenge of climbing the ‘Death Zone’ – the altitude above 8,000 meters where the body begins to shut down.
Alex’s team, led by renowned Sherpa guide, Kami Rita Sherpa, fixed ropes and set up camps along the route. They climbed through the Khumbu Icefall, a treacherous section of towering ice blocks, and crossed the perilous Western Cwm. On May 16, after a grueling 12-hour ascent from Camp IV, Alex reached the summit, his Maltese flag held high against the thin air.
Back Home to a Hero’s Welcome
News of Alex’s achievement spread like wildfire back in Malta. Social media was abuzz with pride and congratulatory messages. The Malta Mountaineering Club, of which Alex is a member, hosted a reception in his honor at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. Minister for Tourism, Clayton Bartolo, presented Alex with a certificate of merit, acknowledging his outstanding achievement.
“It’s incredible to see how far a Maltese person can go,” Minister Bartolo said, “Alex’s feat is not just a personal triumph, but a testament to Malta’s spirit of resilience and determination.”
Alex, humbled by the outpouring of support, reflects, “I’m proud to have put Malta on the mountaineering map. But this is just the beginning. I hope my story inspires more Maltese to push their limits and explore the great outdoors.”
