Gżira Balcony Plunge: Man Hospitalised After Three-Storey Fall

Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Tuesday evening after a man plummeted three storeys from a balcony, landing on a parked car below. The dramatic incident, which occurred around 8:30 PM, left the man, a 35-year-old Maltese national, with serious injuries.

Residents Recall the Moment

Residents of Triq San Ġorġ, where the incident took place, recounted the scene in shock. “I heard a loud thud and then screams,” said Maria, a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “I looked out and saw him lying on the car, not moving.”

Another resident, Joseph, who lives on the third floor, said, “I was on my balcony when I saw him fall. It happened so fast. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

Emergency Response

The Malta Police Force and Civil Protection Department were quick to respond. An ambulance arrived within minutes, and the man was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition. His current status remains unknown.

The incident caused a stir in the usually quiet residential area. Neighbours gathered outside, some in tears, others in disbelief. The street was cordoned off, and the damaged car, a silver Ford Fiesta, was towed away.

Investigation Underway

Police are treating the incident as an accident and have launched an investigation. They are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. “We need to establish the circumstances leading up to the fall,” said a police spokesperson.

This is not the first balcony fall incident in Malta this year. In January, a woman in her 60s fell from a balcony in Birkirkara, sustaining serious injuries. These incidents have raised concerns about balcony safety, with some calling for stricter regulations.

In the meantime, residents of Triq San Ġorġ are left shaken. “It’s scary to think something like this can happen so close to home,” said Maria. “I hope the man recovers soon.”

This is a developing story. Hot Malta will provide updates as more information becomes available.
