Man Hospitalised After 3-Storey Gżira Balcony Fall
Gżira Balcony Plunge: Man Seriously Injured
Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Saturday evening after a man plummeted three storeys from a balcony, landing on a parked car below. The incident, which occurred around 8 pm at Triq San Ġorġ, left the 35-year-old man with serious injuries, requiring immediate hospitalization.
Rescue Operation
The man, who has not been identified, was found unconscious and bleeding on the roof of a white Peugeot parked outside the block of flats. Neighbours and passersby quickly alerted the police and ambulance services. Firefighters from the Marsa station were also called in to assist, using ladders to reach the man and provide initial medical aid.
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department and the Maltese Red Cross arrived shortly after, stabilizing the man’s condition before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. His injuries are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.
Investigation Underway
The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear. Police are treating the incident as an accident and have launched an investigation. They are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
Triq San Ġorġ was closed to traffic for several hours while emergency services attended to the scene. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud thud followed by screams, with some rushing out to find the man lying injured on the car.
Balcony Safety Concerns
This incident has once again raised concerns about balcony safety in Malta’s densely populated urban areas. Many balconies in older buildings lack proper railings or barriers, posing a risk to residents, especially children and the elderly.
In recent years, there have been several calls for stricter regulations and enforcement to ensure balconies are safe. However, progress has been slow, with many property owners reluctant to carry out costly renovations.
Gżira Local Council has expressed its concern over the incident and has called on the government to prioritize balcony safety measures. “We need to ensure that our buildings are safe for all residents,” a council spokesperson said.
In the meantime, the man’s family has been informed and is by his side at Mater Dei. They have asked for privacy during this difficult time.
