Żabbar Council Rescues Historic Hompesch Theatre
Żabbar’s Cultural Rescue: Council Acquires Hompesch Theatre
Imagine the echo of laughter and applause fading away, the last light dimming on the stage, and the heavy velvet curtain falling shut. This could have been the final scene at the historic Hompesch Theatre in Żabbar, had it not been for the town council’s timely intervention. In a move that has sparked joy and relief among locals and culture enthusiasts alike, Żabbar council has purchased the iconic theatre, saving it from potential commercial development.
From Baroque Church to Cultural Hub
The Hompesch Theatre, nestled in the heart of Żabbar, is a testament to the town’s rich history and cultural heritage. Originally built as a Baroque church in the 17th century, it was converted into a theatre in the late 19th century by the Knights of St. John. The theatre has since hosted many performances, from traditional Maltese plays to international opera and ballet, making it a beloved institution for generations of Maltese.
However, the theatre’s future was cast into uncertainty when its owners, the Society of Jesus, put it up for sale last year. Rumors swirled about potential commercial developers eyeing the prime real estate, sparking fears that the theatre’s historic facade and cultural significance would be lost forever.
Żabbar Council Steps In
Stepping in to save the day, Żabbar council announced in February that it had acquired the Hompesch Theatre. The council, led by Mayor Antonello Gauci, has plans to restore and renovate the theatre, ensuring that it continues to serve as a cultural hub for the community. The project is expected to cost around €1.5 million, with funding coming from Żabbar council’s own resources and a €500,000 grant from the Malta Arts Council.
“We couldn’t stand by and watch our cultural heritage be lost,” Gauci told Hot Malta. “The Hompesch Theatre is more than just a building – it’s a symbol of Żabbar’s history and identity. We’re committed to preserving it for future generations to enjoy.”
Restoration and New Beginnings
The restoration project is expected to begin later this year, with the council aiming to restore the theatre to its former glory while also bringing it up to modern safety and accessibility standards. The project will include repairs to the theatre’s historic facade, as well as upgrades to its seating, lighting, and sound systems.
Once the renovations are complete, the Hompesch Theatre will once again host a variety of cultural events and performances. The council has already started engaging with local arts organizations and community groups to plan programming for the theatre’s reopening.
For many in Żabbar, the council’s acquisition of the Hompesch Theatre is a victory for cultural preservation and community spirit. “This theatre is our heritage, our legacy,” said Maria Camilleri, a Żabbar resident and long-time theatre enthusiast. “I’m so grateful to the council for stepping in and saving it. I can’t wait to see it filled with life and laughter again.”
