Mount Carmel Nurses: Patients at Risk in Refurbished Garden
Nurses’ Alarm: Patients at Risk in Mount Carmel’s Revamped Garden
Picture this: A patient, frail and elderly, teeters on the edge of Mount Carmel Hospital’s newly refurbished garden. The once tranquil space, now a maze of construction, offers little stability. This isn’t a scene from a horror film, but a reality nurses warn could lead to tragedy.
The Refurbishment Dilemma
Mount Carmel Hospital, nestled in the heart of Msida, has been undergoing a much-needed facelift. The garden refurbishment, part of this project, was meant to provide patients with a serene space to recover. However, nurses are now raising alarm bells, claiming the opposite is happening.
“The garden is a safety hazard,” says a nurse who wished to remain anonymous. “Patients, especially the elderly and those with mobility issues, are at risk of falling or getting injured. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.”
Patients’ Plight
Patients and visitors alike are struggling to navigate the construction site. “It’s like walking through a minefield,” says Joseph, a 75-year-old patient. “I’ve seen patients stumble and nearly fall. It’s not safe at all.”
Visitors, too, are finding it challenging. “I had to help my mother-in-law navigate the garden,” says Maria, a regular visitor. “It was like trying to walk on a obstacle course. It’s not what you expect when you come to visit a loved one in hospital.”
Nurses’ Warning
Nurses have been vocal about their concerns, but their warnings have fallen on deaf ears, they claim. “We’ve raised this issue with management, but nothing has changed,” says the anonymous nurse. “We fear that patients could die or suffer serious injuries before something is done.”
In response to these concerns, the hospital administration issued a statement saying, “We are aware of the issues and are working diligently to resolve them. Patient safety is our top priority.”
The Way Forward
The refurbishment was meant to enhance patient experience, not put them at risk. It’s high time the hospital administration takes immediate action to ensure the safety of its patients. After all, a hospital should be a place of healing, not harm.
“We just want our patients to be safe,” says the nurse. “That’s not too much to ask for, is it?”
