Mount Carmel Nurses: Refurbished Garden Puts Patients at Risk
Nurses’ Warning: Mount Carmel’s Refurbished Garden Poses Patient Risk
Imagine, if you will, the peaceful scene at Mount Carmel Hospital’s garden. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow over the neatly trimmed hedges and the old, sturdy trees that have stood witness to decades of Malta’s healthcare history. But this idyllic picture belies a growing concern among nurses, who warn that the recently refurbished garden could be putting patients at risk.
The Refurbishment: A New Look, Old Concerns
The garden, a cherished space for patients and staff alike, has undergone a facelift. New pathways, modern seating areas, and vibrant plant life have transformed the space. Yet, nurses are raising alarm bells about the refurbishment’s impact on patient safety. They argue that the new design, while aesthetically pleasing, lacks crucial safety features and could lead to accidents.
“We’ve seen patients wandering off, confused and disoriented, only to find themselves in areas they shouldn’t be in,” says a nurse who wished to remain anonymous. “The garden’s layout now makes it easier for them to get lost or hurt themselves.”
Safety Features: Absent or Inadequate
The nurses point to several issues. The new pathways, while wide and inviting, lack clear signage to guide patients. The seating areas, though comfortable, are not secure, allowing patients to wander off unnoticed. And the vibrant plants, while beautiful, can be harmful if ingested by confused or disoriented patients.
“We’ve had incidents where patients have eaten parts of the plants, leading to stomach upsets and even hospitalisation,” the nurse reveals. “It’s a risk we could have avoided with better planning.”
The Hospital’s Response: Listening, but Slow
Mount Carmel Hospital has acknowledged the nurses’ concerns. A spokesperson told Hot Malta, “We are aware of the issues raised and are working diligently to address them. Patient safety is our top priority, and we appreciate the nurses’ feedback.” However, nurses feel that the response has been too slow, with no concrete changes implemented yet.
“We understand that change takes time, but we’re talking about patient safety here,” the nurse says. “We need action now, not promises for the future.”
The Future: A Balanced Approach
The refurbished garden is a testament to the hospital’s efforts to create a welcoming, healing environment. But it also underscores the challenge of balancing aesthetics with safety, especially in a healthcare setting. Nurses hope that the hospital will work with them to find a solution that respects both priorities.
“We’re not saying the garden should be ugly,” the nurse explains. “We just want it to be safe. With the right design and features, it can be both.”
As the sun sets over Mount Carmel’s garden, the nurses’ warning echoes through the wards. The garden may be beautiful, but it’s also a potential danger. And until that changes, patients could be at risk.
