Mount Carmel Nurses Warn: Patients at Risk
Mount Carmel’s Secret Escape: Nurses Raise Alarm on Patient Safety
Imagine this: a patient, frail and disoriented, wandering the streets of Msida, just metres from the supposed safety of Mount Carmel Hospital. This isn’t a scene from a movie, but a reality that nurses at the hospital are warning could become all too common, thanks to a recent refurbishment that’s left them with more questions than answers.
Refurbishment Gone Awry?
Mount Carmel Hospital, a beacon of healthcare in Msida, has been undergoing a much-needed facelift. However, nurses are now raising concerns that the refurbishment, particularly the garden area, has created an escape route for vulnerable patients. The once-secure garden, now transformed into an open space with a new entrance, has left patients with easy access to the bustling streets outside.
Nurses, who wish to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, have reported incidents where patients have managed to slip away unnoticed. “It’s only a matter of time before a patient gets seriously hurt or worse,” one nurse told Hot Malta. “We’re doing our best to keep an eye on them, but it’s like trying to herd cats.”
Hospital Management Responds
When approached for comment, Mount Carmel Hospital’s management acknowledged the concerns but insisted that patient safety remains their top priority. “We are aware of the nurses’ concerns and are currently reviewing the garden area to ensure it remains a safe and secure environment for our patients,” a spokesperson said.
However, nurses claim that management has been slow to address their concerns. “We’ve been raising this issue for months, but nothing has changed,” another nurse said. “We just want our patients to be safe, and right now, we don’t feel they are.”
Community Concerns
News of the potential escape route has also raised concerns among local residents. “We love having Mount Carmel in our community, but we’re worried about the safety of our streets if patients start wandering off,” said Joe, a long-time Msida resident.
Meanwhile, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) has thrown its weight behind the nurses, calling on the hospital to take immediate action. “Our members are dedicated to providing the best care possible, but they can’t do that if they’re constantly worried about their patients’ safety,” said MUMN President, Paul Pace.
As the situation at Mount Carmel continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the refurbishment of the garden area has raised serious questions about patient safety. With nurses, residents, and the union all calling for action, the ball is now in the hospital’s court to ensure that the garden remains a place of healing, not escape.
