Żebbuġ’s Galdes-shaped void: A tale of change and progress
District 6 profile: A Galdes-shaped void
Standing at the corner of Triq San Giljan and Triq il-Kbira in Żebbuġ, you can’t miss it. A gaping hole, a void where a house once stood, now stares back at you, a silent witness to Żebbuġ’s changing scene. This is District 6, a Galdes-shaped void in the heart of Malta’s rural north.
From Galdes to Gaping Hole
Until recently, this spot was home to a traditional Maltese townhouse, owned by the Galdes family for generations. The house, like many in Żebbuġ, was a blend of old and new, its stone facade a testament to Malta’s rich history, its modern interior a nod to the 21st century. But in 2021, the house was demolished, leaving behind a void that’s become a talking point in the community.
Ehemalige Besitzerin Maria Galdes, now in her 70s, remembers the house fondly. “It was more than just a home,” she says, “It was a part of us, our family’s story etched into its walls.” The decision to sell and demolish was a difficult one, driven by financial needs and the promise of a modern, low-maintenance apartment complex.
District 6: A New Chapter
In its place, District 6 is rising. A modern, 12-apartment complex, it’s a stark contrast to the traditional townhouses that surround it. The project, led by local developer Joe Xuereb, promises energy-efficient homes, modern amenities, and a fresh take on Żebbuġ’s real estate scene.
Xuereb sees District 6 as more than just a residential project. “It’s an opportunity to blend Żebbuġ’s past with its future,” he says. “We’re preserving the spirit of traditional Maltese architecture while offering modern, comfortable living spaces.” The complex will also include a small commercial space, adding to Żebbuġ’s growing list of local businesses.
Żebbuġ: A Town in Transition
Żebbuġ, like much of Malta, is grappling with change. Its rural charm is being challenged by the relentless march of progress, with traditional townhouses making way for modern apartment blocks. Some welcome the change, others mourn the loss of ŻebbuĒ’s traditional character.
For Maria Galdes, the change is bittersweet. “I understand the need for progress,” she says, “But I can’t help but miss the old house, the old Żebbuġ.” Despite her nostalgia, she’s optimistic about the future. ” Żebbuġ is changing, and that’s not a bad thing. We just need to make sure we’re changing for the better.”
As District 6 takes shape, Żebbuġ watches and waits. The void left by the Galdes house is filling up, but the debate about ŻebbuĒ’s future continues. One thing’s for sure, though – ŻebbuĒ’s story isn’t over yet. It’s just entering a new chapter, a Galdes-shaped void in its history.
