Caruana Silent on Labour’s Bill
Caruana’s Silence on Labour’s Bill: A Cost Too High to Mention?
Standing at the podium in Castille Square, Clyde Caruana, Labour Party’s spokesperson for finance, had the sun at his back and a crowd of supporters before him. Yet, when it came to the crunch, he seemed to shiver in the shadow of a question that’s been haunting his party’s manifesto: How much will it all cost?
Labour’s Big Promises
Caruana was there to unveil Labour’s plans for Malta’s economic future. It’s a future painted in bold strokes – free childcare, increased pensions, a national health service overhaul. It’s a vision that’s won Labour hearts and minds, but it’s also one that’s left many wondering how the party plans to pay for it all.
Caruana, however, was tight-lipped. When pressed on the overall cost of Labour’s manifesto pledges, he deflected, “We’re focusing on the vision, not the numbers.” But in a country where every cent counts, is that enough?
Numbers Matter
Malta’s finance minister, Tonio Fenech, was quick to pounce on Caruana’s evasiveness. “It’s like ordering a meal without knowing the price,” he quipped. “You might love the menu, but when the bill arrives, you might find it’s more than you can afford.”
Fenech’s point is valid. Labour’s promises are enticing, but they’re also expensive. Free childcare alone could cost upwards of €50 million a year. And that’s just one pledge. So, where’s the money coming from?
Caruana’s Calculations
Caruana insists that Labour has done its sums. He points to the party’s economic team – a who’s who of Malta’s financial elite – as proof that Labour knows what it’s doing. But if that’s the case, why the secrecy?
Some speculate that Labour is keeping its cards close to its chest to avoid scaring voters with big numbers. Others suggest that the party simply hasn’t done the math yet. Whatever the reason, one thing’s for sure: Malta deserves to know the full picture before it casts its vote.
So, Clyde, how about it? The sun’s still shining, the crowd’s still waiting, and the question’s still hanging in the air. How much will it all cost?
