District 7: Meet Your Candidates
Knock, Knock: District 7 Candidates on Your Doorstep
It’s a sunny afternoon in Msida, and the usually bustling streets are filled with an unusual hum. It’s not the chatter of students from the University of Malta or the clinking of coffee cups at the local cafes. It’s the sound of campaigning. District 7 is abuzz with political activity as candidates for the upcoming local council elections are out in full force, knocking on doors, shaking hands, and making their pitch.
Meet the Contenders
This time around, District 7 has five candidates vying for your vote. There’s Mark Camilleri, the incumbent mayor and Labour Party candidate, who’s been in the hot seat since 2019. Then there’s Joseph Muscat, not to be confused with the former Prime Minister, who’s running on a PN ticket. The other candidates are Rosemarie Aquilina (ADPD), Claudette Buttigieg (PD), and Mario Gauci (Independent).
Issues on the Table
So, what are these candidates promising? Well, it’s a mix of local and national issues. Traffic congestion is a hot topic, with candidates proposing solutions ranging from better public transport to pedestrianizing certain streets. Affordable housing is another key issue, with candidates offering ideas like incentives for developers to build more affordable units or stricter rent control measures.
Education is also a key concern, with candidates discussing everything from improving school facilities to increasing the number of kindergarten places. And, of course, there’s the ever-present issue of development. Candidates are promising to balance the need for progress with the preservation of Msida’s unique character.
But it’s not all about the big issues. Candidates are also promising to tackle the small things that make a big difference to residents’ daily lives. That could mean anything from fixing potholes to improving street lighting to planting more trees.
Getting to Know the Candidates
But who are these candidates, really? What makes them tick? Over the next few weeks, Hot Malta will be sitting down with each of them to find out. We’ll be asking about their vision for Msida, their plans for tackling the big issues, and their ideas for improving our community. We’ll also be asking about their personal stories, their backgrounds, and what drives them to run for office.
So, keep an eye out for our candidate profiles. And in the meantime, if you see a candidate knocking on your door, don’t be a stranger. Say hello, ask some questions, and make your voice heard. After all, this is your district, and these are your candidates. It’s your vote that will decide who leads Msida into the future.
