Malta’s Animals Get Lifeline: Local Councils Invited to Host Animal First Aid Courses
First Aid for Paws: Local Councils Invited to Register for Animal First Aid Courses
Picture this: a sweltering summer day in Marsaxlokk. The bustling fishing village is a riot of colours and sounds, with tourists and locals alike enjoying the day. Suddenly, a distressed dog is spotted, panting heavily and in clear distress. In such a scenario, every second counts. But what if the nearest person with animal first aid training is miles away?
This is where the Animal First Aid Malta initiative steps in. They’re inviting local councils across Malta to register their interest in hosting animal first aid courses, aiming to create a network of trained first responders in every locality.
Why Animal First Aid Matters
Malta’s love for animals is no secret. From our stray cat colonies to our beloved pets, our island is home to countless creatures. Yet, animal first aid training is often overlooked. Animal First Aid Malta is on a mission to change that.
“Animals can’t tell us when they’re in pain or distress,” explains Dr. Maria Galea, founder of Animal First Aid Malta. “Being able to recognise signs of distress and provide immediate care can mean the difference between life and death for an animal.”
What to Expect from the Courses
The animal first aid courses will be tailored to suit each locality’s needs. They’ll cover a range of topics, from recognising signs of distress to administering CPR and treating wounds. The courses will be hands-on, with participants learning practical skills they can use in real-life situations.
“We want to empower people to act when they see an animal in need,” says Dr. Galea. “Whether it’s a dog that’s been in a road traffic accident or a cat that’s been injured, we want people to feel confident in providing immediate care.”
Councils interested in hosting a course can register their interest by contacting Animal First Aid Malta. The initiative is also open to collaborations with local NGOs and animal welfare organisations.
: A Nation of Animal First Aiders
Animal First Aid Malta’s vision is to create a nation of animal first aiders. They believe that by empowering local communities, they can significantly improve the welfare of Malta’s animals.
“We want to see a future where every locality has a network of trained animal first aiders,” says Dr. Galea. “Where people feel confident in providing care, and where animals know they’re in safe hands.”
So, the next time you’re enjoying a day out in Marsaxlokk, or any other locality across Malta, remember: you could be the one to make a difference. And with animal first aid training, you’ll know just what to do.
