Malta’s First: Alex Borg Summits Everest
Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: First Local to Summit Everest
At 8:15 AM on May 16th, Maltese mountaineer Alex Borg stood atop the world, literally. He became the first person from Malta to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest peak on Earth. As he planted the Maltese flag into the ice, he looked out at the vast, snow-covered scene, a sense of pride and accomplishment washing over him.
From Mdina’s Silent City to the Roof of the World
Alex’s journey began not in the towering peaks of the Himalayas, but in the quiet, historic streets of Mdina. Born and raised in this ‘Silent City’, Alex’s love for the outdoors was ignited at an early age, exploring the rugged terrain of Malta’s sister islands, Gozo and Comino. His passion for mountaineering grew during his time at the University of Malta, where he joined the university’s mountaineering club.
Years of training and preparation led to this moment. Alex’s Everest expedition was a culmination of his dedication, resilience, and a deep-rooted love for the challenge that high-altitude climbing brings. “Every step was a reminder of home,” Alex said, “from the narrow streets of Mdina to the rugged coastline of Dingli Cliffs, each scene echoed in the vastness of Everest.”
Malta’s Everest Fever
Back home, Malta was abuzz with excitement. Social media platforms were flooded with messages of support and pride. The Prime Minister, Robert Abela, took to Twitter to congratulate Alex, hailing his achievement as a testament to Maltese determination and courage. Schools across the country held assemblies to discuss Alex’s feat, inspiring young students to dream big and reach for the skies.
Alex’s climb also sparked a conversation about the potential of Maltese mountaineering. The Malta Mountaineering Club, of which Alex is a member, has seen a surge in interest and new members since his successful ascent. The club is now planning expeditions to other high-altitude peaks, hoping to build on Alex’s achievement and put Malta on the mountaineering map.
Alex’s journey is more than just a personal triumph. It’s a testament to what Maltese determination and perseverance can achieve. As he stood at the summit, he looked back at the long, arduous journey he had undertaken, not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. “It’s not about being the best,” he said, “it’s about being better than you were yesterday. And that’s what I’ve tried to do, one step at a time.”
