Maltese Mountaineer Reaches Everest Summit
Malta’s Own Everest Hero
Imagine standing at the top of the world, the thin air buzzing with the triumph of a lifetime’s dream. This is exactly where Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, found himself on May 16th, after a grueling climb up Mount Everest. The 42-year-old from Msida became the first Maltese national to reach the summit of the world’s highest peak, standing at a staggering 8,848.86 meters above sea level.
From Mdina’s Silent City to Everest’s Roof of the World
Borg’s journey to Everest began not on the icy slopes of the Himalayas, but in the quiet streets of Mdina. The ancient city, known for its silence and serenity, was the backdrop to Borg’s childhood and early adulthood. It was here that he cultivated his love for the outdoors, exploring the rugged Maltese scene and dreaming of bigger challenges.
His passion for mountaineering grew, leading him to tackle peaks across Europe and beyond. But Everest, the ultimate challenge, had always been on his radar. “It’s the highest peak in the world,” he says, “It’s a challenge that pushes you to your limits, both physically and mentally.”
Training and Preparation
Borg’s Everest expedition was years in the making. He spent months training in the Maltese countryside, hiking up and down Dingli Cliffs and the rugged terrain of Comino. He also undertook high-altitude training in Nepal, acclimatizing his body to the thin air and extreme cold.
His support team, based in Malta, played a crucial role. “They were my rock,” Borg says. “From sending care packages to Nepal to keeping my spirits high, they were always there.”
Summit Day
After weeks of climbing, Borg reached the summit on May 16th. “It was surreal,” he recalls. “The view was incredible, but it was the sense of accomplishment that was overwhelming. I thought of everyone back home, of Malta, and of how far I’d come.”
Borg’s achievement has sparked a wave of national pride. Social media has been flooded with congratulatory messages, and the Malta Mountaineering Club has hailed him as an inspiration. “Alex’s feat is a testament to what Maltese people can achieve,” says the club’s president.
Back in Malta, Borg is already . “I want to inspire more Maltese people to take on challenges, to push their boundaries,” he says. “And who knows, maybe one day we’ll see a Maltese expedition on Everest.”
