Maltese Mountaineer Tops Everest

Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: A Peak Above the Rest

Imagine standing at 8,848.86 metres, the highest point on Earth, with the world literally at your feet. This isn’t a dream for Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, it’s a reality. On May 16th, 2023, Borg became the first Maltese national to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the roof of the world.

From the Mediterranean to the Himalayas

Borg’s journey began not in the icy peaks of Nepal, but in the sunny streets of Msida, Malta. A seasoned mountaineer, he has scaled numerous peaks across Europe and Africa. But Everest, the ultimate challenge, had always been on his radar. “I’ve always been drawn to the highest peaks,” he says, “Everest was the final frontier.”

Training in Malta’s rugged terrain, Borg prepared for the extreme conditions of Everest. He hiked the Dingli Cliffs, climbed the Ta’ Cenc Plateau, and even trained in the cold waters of the Mediterranean. “Malta might be small, but it has its own challenges,” he laughs.

An Uphill Struggle

Borg’s Everest expedition was no walk in the park. It was a grueling, 65-day journey that pushed him to his limits. He faced extreme temperatures, fierce winds, and the constant threat of avalanches and altitude sickness. But it was the ‘Khumbu Icefall’ that truly tested him. “It’s a labyrinth of towering ice blocks, constantly shifting and groaning,” he recalls, “one wrong step and you could trigger an avalanche.”

But Borg persevered, climbing through the night to avoid the heat of the day. He reached the summit at 5:30 AM, local time, on May 16th. “Standing on top of the world, looking out at the curvature of the Earth, it was surreal,” he says, “all the pain and suffering just melted away.”

Bringing Malta to the Top of the World

Borg didn’t just carry his gear to the summit, he carried Malta with him. He unfurled the Maltese flag at the top, capturing the moment for history. “I wanted to show that Maltese people can achieve great things,” he says, “no matter how small our island is.”

Back in Malta, Borg’s feat has sparked a wave of national pride. His story has been splashed across local news, and he’s been inundated with messages of congratulations. “It’s amazing to see how much this has inspired people,” he says, “I hope it encourages more Maltese to push their boundaries.”

Borg’s next challenge? He’s keeping that under wraps for now. But one thing’s for sure, it won’t be his last. After all, as he says, “There’s always another peak to conquer.”
