Meet the Candidates in District 7
District 7 Profile: Meet the Candidates on the Campaign Trail
Malta’s political scene is abuzz with activity as the local council elections approach. In District 7, which stretches from Msida to Gżira and includes the bustling streets of Birkirkara, five candidates are vying for your vote. Let’s meet them.
Meet the Candidates
At the heart of Birkirkara’s bustling Republic Street, Dr. Mario Mallia, the incumbent mayor, is a familiar face. A dentist by profession, he’s been in politics for over a decade. His campaign promises include continued investment in infrastructure and a push for more green spaces.
Just around the corner, at the historic Casa Rocca, we find Dr. David Cassar. A medical doctor turned politician, he’s new to the scene but not new to the district. His focus? Better healthcare facilities and more affordable housing.
In Msida, near the University of Malta, Dr. Joseph Muscat (no, not that one) is making waves. A lecturer in political science, he’s promising a fresh perspective and a focus on youth engagement.
Gżira’s waterfront is where you’ll find Ingrid Vella. A social worker by profession, she’s running on a platform of community empowerment and environmental sustainability.
Rounding off the list is Alex Saliba, a long-time resident of Birkirkara. A businessman, he’s promising to bring a practical, business-minded approach to local governance.
Issues at the Forefront
Traffic congestion, housing affordability, and environmental sustainability are the hot topics in District 7. Each candidate has their own take on these issues.
Dr. Mallia points to his track record, highlighting the new roundabouts and pedestrian zones he’s implemented. Dr. Cassar, meanwhile, wants to see more bus lanes and better public transport. Dr. Muscat is pushing for more cycling infrastructure, while Ingrid Vella wants to see more green spaces and better waste management. Alex Saliba, on the other hand, wants to attract more businesses to the area to boost the local economy.
What the Candidates Say
We caught up with the candidates to get their thoughts on the campaign trail.
“It’s been a humbling experience,” says Dr. Mallia. “Seeing the support from residents, hearing their concerns, it’s what keeps me going.”
Dr. Cassar is enthusiastic about the response he’s getting. “People are ready for change,” he says. “They want someone who understands their struggles, who’s willing to listen and act.”
Ingrid Vella is passionate about her community. “I’ve seen Gżira change over the years,” she says. “I want to make sure that change is for the better, for everyone.”
Alex Saliba is confident in his approach. “I’ve been a businessman for years,” he says. “I know what it takes to get things done, to make things work.”
And Dr. Muscat? “Politics is about more than just promises,” he says. “It’s about delivering, about making a real difference in people’s lives.”
Your Vote Matters
The local council elections are about more than just casting a vote. It’s about having your say, about shaping the future of your community. So, get out there, meet the candidates, ask the tough questions. Because on May 25, your vote will make a difference.
As Dr. Mallia puts it, “This isn’t about me, or any of us. It’s about you, the voter. It’s about what you want for your community, for your future.”
