It’s a brisk morning in Msida, and the scent of fresh bread wafts through the air. But today, it’s not just the aroma that’s drawing a crowd. Candidates for District 7 are out in force, armed with posters, flyers, and a common goal: your vote. As Malta gears up for the local council elections, we take a closer look at the candidates vying for your support in District 7.

District 7, which includes Msida, Birkirkara, and part of Gżira, has a total of 16 candidates. They represent a mix of established parties and independent candidates, each with their own vision for the district. Here’s a snapshot of some of the key contenders:

• Labor Party (PL): The PL has fielded five candidates, including incumbent councillor and former Mayor of Birkirkara, John Boxall.
• Nationalist Party (PN): The PN is running with four candidates, led by Birkirkara resident and local businessman, Adrian Delia.
• Independent Candidates: There are seven independent candidates, including former PL councillor and local activist, Joe Mizzi, and environmentalist and Gżira resident, Ruth Farrugia.

From traffic congestion to affordable housing, candidates are focusing on a range of issues that matter to residents. Here are a few key promises:

• Traffic Management: Many candidates are pledging to tackle traffic congestion, with proposals ranging from improved public transport to pedestrianisation of certain areas.
• Affordable Housing: With housing prices soaring, several candidates are promising to push for more affordable housing options in the district.
• Environmental Concerns: Several candidates, including independent Ruth Farrugia, are highlighting environmental issues such as air quality and green spaces.

We caught up with a few candidates to get their views on the district and their plans if elected:

“Msida and Birkirkara are vibrant areas with a lot of potential. I want to work with residents and businesses to make sure we’re preserving what’s great about our district while also moving forward.” – John Boxall, PL

“We need to address the traffic issues in the area. I believe in working with residents and businesses to find practical solutions that benefit everyone.” – Adrian Delia, PN

“I’m running because I want to see more action on environmental issues. We need to protect our green spaces and improve air quality for the sake of our health and our children’s future.” – Ruth Farrugia, Independent
