Putin’s Power: Tight or Slipping?
Putin’s Grip: Tightening or Slipping?
In the heart of Moscow, at the iconic Red Square, the onion domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral glisten under the winter sun. Yet, the usual bustle is tempered by an undercurrent of unease. Vladimir Putin, the man who has dominated Russian politics for two decades, is facing headwinds at home. But how tight is his grip on power?
Economic Storms and Protests
Malta, with its close ties to Russia, feels the ripples of Putin’s challenges. The Russian economy, heavily reliant on oil and gas, is grappling with sanctions and low prices. In Valletta, Russian expats and tourists, once a common sight, have thinned. “Business is down,” laments Ivan, a Russian restaurant owner in Paceville. “People are worried about the future.”
Back in Russia, economic woes have sparked protests. In 2017, Putin’s approval ratings dipped to their lowest since 2006, thanks to unpopular pension reforms. In Moscow, thousands braved sub-zero temperatures to protest, a rare sight in Putin’s Russia.
Navigating the Political scene
Putin’s political machine, however, remains strong. He’s tightened control over media, marginalized opposition, and rewritten the constitution to allow him to stay in power until 2036. In Malta, where Russian influence is a sensitive topic, locals watch these developments warily. “We see what’s happening in Russia,” says Joseph, a political analyst in Msida. “It’s a reminder of what can happen when power consolidates.”
Yet, Putin’s popularity has rebounded, thanks to a patriotic surge following the annexation of Crimea. In Malta, where the Russian community is small but vocal, support for Putin remains strong. “He’s standing up to the West,” argues Maria, a Russian retiree in Sliema. “That’s what we want.”
: Challenges and Opportunities
Putin’s future depends on many factors. His health, the economy, and the West’s stance on Russia will all play a role. In Malta, where the Russian connection is a mix of opportunity and concern, locals are watching closely. “We need to be careful,” says Joseph. “Russia’s strength or weakness can affect us.”
For now, Putin’s grip on power seems secure. But as Ivan in Paceville says, “Things can change quickly. You never know what’s around the corner.”
