Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Collision: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Ħal Far on Tuesday afternoon following a collision involving a motorcyclist and a car. The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man, was left with serious injuries and was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital.
What Happened?
The collision occurred around 3:30 PM near the Ħal Far roundabout, causing traffic chaos during the busy afternoon rush hour. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, who was traveling towards Ħal Far from Ħal Qormi, collide with a car that was attempting to merge onto the Regional Road from the Ħal Far Industrial Estate.
The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, was thrown from his bike and landed on the roadside. He was immediately attended to by paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department and the Maltese Red Cross, who arrived at the scene within minutes.
Traffic Diversions and Delays
The collision led to significant traffic delays, with motorists reporting long queues stretching back towards Ħal Qormi and all the way to the Marsa junction. Traffic police were quickly deployed to the area to manage the flow of traffic and assist with diversions.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes, such as the Marsa Bypass or the Triq il-Kunsill tal-Ewropa, to reach their destinations. The Regional Road remained partially closed for several hours while police investigated the cause of the collision.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the collision and have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. The driver of the car involved in the collision was also taken to Mater Dei Hospital for observation, although their injuries are not believed to be serious.
In a statement, the Malta Police Force said, “We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist with our investigations to contact us on 2124 2004 or 119.”
This is the latest in a series of collisions involving motorcyclists on Malta’s roads this year. According to statistics from the Transport Malta, there have been over 50 motorcycle-related accidents so far in 2023, with many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.
Road safety campaigners have called for increased awareness and stricter enforcement of road traffic laws to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents on the island’s roads.
As the investigation into Tuesday’s collision continues, our thoughts are with the motorcyclist and their family at this difficult time. We wish them a speedy recovery and urge all road users to remain vigilant and take extra care when driving, especially during busy periods.
