Sliema’s False Alarm: Search for Swimmer Called Off
As the sun began to set over the bustling seaside town of Sliema, a false alarm sent emergency services into a flurry of activity on Saturday evening. Reports of a swimmer in difficulty off the coast of Tigne Point sparked a major search operation, only to be called off hours later with no sign of anyone in distress.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses gathered along the promenade, pointing towards the open sea as lifeboats and speedboats crisscrossed the water. “I was walking my dog when I saw the commotion,” said local resident, Maria Attard. “The sea was calm, but the search was intense. It was quite worrying.”
Another bystander, Joseph Camilleri, echoed her sentiments. “I’ve seen many false alarms here, but this one seemed serious. It’s a relief to know it was a false alarm, but it’s also a reminder of the importance of water safety.”
Emergency Services Response
The Malta Maritime Squadron, Police, and Civil Protection Department all responded to the incident. A Police spokesperson confirmed, “We received a report of a swimmer in difficulty around 7:30 PM. Our units, along with other emergency services, conducted an extensive search but found no signs of anyone in distress.”
The search was called off around 10:30 PM, with no further action planned unless new information comes to light.
False Alarms: A Growing Concern
False alarms, while thankfully not resulting in any loss of life, are a growing concern for emergency services. They divert resources from other potential emergencies and can cause unnecessary worry among the public.
Inspector Ian Spiteri from the Civil Protection Department commented, “We urge the public to be responsible. If you suspect someone is in danger, please call us, but please, be sure. False alarms strain our resources and could delay our response to a genuine emergency.”
The number for the Civil Protection Department’s emergency line is 112.
As the summer season approaches, water safety will once again be a hot topic in Malta. With Sliema’s beaches and coastal areas drawing thousands of locals and tourists alike, it’s crucial that everyone does their part to ensure safety and prevent false alarms.
Let’s make this summer one of fun and safety, not false alarms and unnecessary worry.
