Motorcyclist Injured in High-Speed Regional Road Crash

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a high-speed collision on the Regional Road in Msida yesterday, where a motorcyclist was left with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the junction with Triq San Pawl, brought traffic to a standstill and highlighted the ongoing issue of speeding on Malta’s roads.

Collision Details and Injuries

The crash, involving a motorcycle and a car, happened around 4 pm, a busy time on the road leading to and from the nearby University of Malta. The motorcyclist, a 32-year-old man from Msida, was thrown from his bike and sustained multiple fractures and lacerations. He was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in a stable but serious condition.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old woman from Birkirkara, was unharmed but visibly shaken. She cooperated with police and provided a statement. No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.

Speeding Concerns and Road Safety Measures

This incident has once again raised concerns about speeding on Malta’s roads, particularly on the Regional Road, which has seen several similar incidents in recent months. The speed limit on this stretch is 60 km/h, but many drivers have been clocked exceeding this limit, with some reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h.

Local residents and councillors have been calling for increased traffic enforcement and the installation of speed cameras to deter speeding. “We’ve been asking for these measures for years,” said Msida mayor Dr. Alexei Dingli. “Something needs to be done before another serious incident happens.”

The Malta Police Force has confirmed that they will be stepping up patrols in the area and considering the installation of speed cameras. “We understand the concerns of the local community,” said a police spokesperson. “Road safety is a top priority, and we will be doing everything in our power to ensure that drivers adhere to the speed limits.”

Witness Appeal and Road Safety Tips

Witnesses to the crash are urged to contact the Malta Police Force on 119 or visit their website to provide a statement. Any information, no matter how small, could prove vital in the ongoing investigation.

In the meantime, the Malta Road Safety Council has reminded drivers to adhere to speed limits and drive according to road conditions. “Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of any collision,” said council chairman Dr. Joseph Cuschieri. “Please, slow down and drive safely.”

As the investigation into this crash continues, one thing is clear: the safety of Malta’s roads depends on the responsibility and awareness of its drivers. Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe.
